I do not own Durarara! And this idea came to me the same as some of my Hetalia fanfics- observing my family. Hee.
On with the story!
Driving his adopted son back from the library and their grocery trip, Shizuo moved the car in and out from behind slow trucks.
"You do know that if you need help getting into summer school, I'll move heaven and earth to help you. And if you miss out on summer school, I'll help you find a job around here." He braked for a stop sign.
"I know." Mikado replied. He was still tired from the divorce between Shizuo and Izaya, and then Shinra and Celty, and now a blunt slip from Shizuo told him that Kida and Saki were living apart since October. Then yesterday Izaya remarried to Namie Yagiri. She was a wonderful scientist, and a beautiful woman, but she would never replace Shizuo in his life.
She was seventeen years too late to be his mother, so he just dealt with her being Izaya's wife and moved on.
"And having you get a job in Ikebukuro isn't selfish of me at all. After all, newlyweds need their time together, so helping you out is me being purely altruistic. I just happen to benefit from it. And it isn't my fault if altruistic is spelled S-E-L-F-I-S-H."
"No it isn't." Mikado replied, feeling life flood back into him as Shizuo continued to go on. He even felt a faint grin pull at his face, and when was the last time he smiled because he had been spending time with one of his parents?
Mikado shoved the thought back before his grin could drop.
"Also, I am not diabolical, manipulative, or devious!"
"And none of those can be filed under megalomaniac power control freak." Mikado dead panned. Shizuo's jaw dropped. Thankfully, he didn't smoke in the car after his son asked him not to.
"Ow!" He proclaimed. "That was rather…Mikado, I'm hurt!"
"Well, I figured if we were going along with it, I might as well go for broke."
Mikado grinned at Shizuo.
Shizuo gave a wry smile. "That you did."
The rest of the drive home was spent chatting, and Mikado felt like he could breathe after the wedding, and the divorces that seemed to be happening left and right. A stray thought cross his mind, about being single for the rest of his life.
Mikado banished that to the back of his mind as well. He could find someone who believed marriage was sacred in this world. He could find that special someone. After all, Seiji and Mika had celebrated their fiftieth anniversary last year. True love did exist in this world….
…Somewhere.
A/N: Ehehehe…[rubs back of head] I didn't meant to dump my psychological woes onto ya'll, but I actually did call my Mom a megalomaniac power control freak because those were the first words out of my mouth (in a good natured way). After everything that's been going around, I just wanted to share that moment in the car where the perfect opportunity to go for broke turned up, and instead of a funny little fanfic, ya'll got a story both funny, and sadder for knowing what was going on in Mikado's (my) head.
Well, like I told Mom, four to eight hours before this hits the internet! And don't worry, I'll update my serious stories soon now that I've had time to figure out what I'm doing.
