A three-hour time difference

07:27AM

Peggy crosses the threshold into the SSR office, briefcase in hand and an elegant ivory umbrella clicking on the floor as she goes.

It's a grey, rainy day in New York City. One that would make the idea of staying in bed under the covers so dreadfully, delightfully tempting.

She moves past Daniel's desk, now freshly occupied by Agent Cooper. The telephone lies silent on her desk.

She sits nonchalantly and clears her throat. "No calls last night, Agent Cooper?".

He has a tired smile on his face when he turns around. "Ah, you wouldn't believe it. Most boring night shift I've ever had".

"Well, that's saying something".

Of course he hasn't called. She assumes that if he were to finally call her back, he would think carefully about the time difference. As if that could be easily forgotten.

Not now, she says to herself, averting her eyes from the receiver. He would be sleeping anyway, under light linens in the heat of Los Angeles. And he hasn't returned her calls after all, so maybe he's trying to send a message.

She ought to recognise a dead end when she sees one. It's just hard to get used to it.

04:27AM

The ceiling fan moves slowly above his head. Daniel follows the paddles' movements with his eyes, a turn after the other.

It's half past seven in New York. He hears the clicking sound of her heels as she walks into the office, a hat pulled slightly down over her eyes, her red lips still curved in the shadow of the smile she exchanged with Rose.

She lives in his tomorrow, always one step ahead. Well, she has always been unreachable, after all. At least, this time he can pretend it is because there seems to be an entire lifetime difference, in those three hours.

He buries his head further into the pillow. The ceiling fan keeps on turning. She might as well be on another planet, or on another star. And she has always been, indeed.

This story is a big first for me: first time I try to write about Peggy and Marvel's Agent Carter, and also first story in English. I hope you haven't found mistakes, but it's unlikely, so please, let me know so that I can correct them.

I hope you enjoyed this quick and short story!
