AN: I don't really write about Snape, because I don't like him, but I saw a picture that made me sympathize with him. It made me very sad, and I wanted to write a Fanfiction about it. Here it is:

"Lily."

Severus Snape's voice sounded so pained, as if he were strangling himself just by saying it, that for a moment Lily was back in her first year. She was lying in the grass next to her best friend, amazed that you could see a sunset this beautiful anywhere in the world.

But only for a moment.

Lily stopped walking and took a deep breath, but she did not turn around. "Oh, where you talking to me?" she asked with more confidence than she felt. Tears welled up in her eyes, but she forced them not to fall. "Have you forgotten that I'm a…oh, what was that word you used…mudblood?"

"Lily, I-" but Severus stopped himself before he could apologize again. He'd apologized. He'd done everything he could, and Lily had made it perfectly clear that she wanted nothing to do with him. That was not what he had come here for. "I heard you're going out with James Potter. Lily, I don't think-"

"No!" Lily cried angrily, spinning on her heel to face him. "You don't think. Who I go out with is none of your business!"

Severus bit his lip, unable to meet Lily's eye. "Lily-"

"Don't you dare," she warned him, low and deadly. "Don't you dare say my name like we're friends. We stopped being friends the day you chose those…Death Eaters over me!"

"I have a really bad feeling about him!" Severus said quickly. The words got all jumbled coming out, and he wasn't quite sure she understood it. But the important thing was that he'd said it before she could interrupt.

Apparently, Lily thought otherwise. "How dare you!?" she screeched at him. "How dare you criticize who I hang around with? Mulciber?" she spat. "Avery? You chose them. And I chose James. Get over it."

Lily turned around and began walking the other way.

Severus didn't move a muscle. He didn't trust himself not to do something stupid.

Just before she was out of his sight, Lily turned and looked at Severus, her eyes glistening with tears. She took a deep breath, and hope sparked inside of Severus.

"And stay away from me," Lily added, turning to walk away before she fell apart completely.

Severus watched her go until she turned the corner. "Lily," he called, but it came out as a whisper. "Lily," he said again, slightly louder. Then he started running.

"Lily," another voice said. There was a chocked sob in reply. "Shh," the voice said. "It's okay. It'll be okay."

Severus poked his head around the corner, and he instantly wished he hadn't. It isn't a particularly pleasant feeling, watching the love of your life kiss your worst enemy.

As quickly as he could, Severus turned back around the corner, but it was too late. He'd already seen them. There was no way he would ever get that image out of his head.

Severus felt his eyes tearing up and, surprised, raised his hand to brush away the tears. But there was no stopping it now.

Lily said she had chosen James. She loved him now. So why did Severus feel like James had stolen her?
