Severus Snape stood outside the Gryffindor common room for another moment, not believing the shocking events that had taken place just now. Lily Evans, his best friend, the only person he actually loved – in whatever way; he didn't want to think about that tonight – had just turned her back on him. She wasn't going to come back to him, and she wouldn't take him back anymore either. He had royally screwed up, and there was no way for him to go back and undo what had transpired between them earlier. He wouldn't know where to start anyway.
He couldn't believe it. He had actually let those stupid, idiotic, moronic, bullying Gryffindors take the one person who had actually cared about him away from him, just like that. It hadn't taken much. Just their taunting words, their actions – but, the humiliation, it had been too much at the moment – their jinxes, their unfairness…
They had made him call his best friend – no, his only friend; he knew, deep down, that his fellow Slytherins weren't his friends, nor would they ever be – that filthy word. Now she didn't want anything to do with him anymore, and it was all their fault. He thought about what she had told him, moments before retreating back into the Gryffindor common room – she had had to make up excuses for him to her other friends for ages. No one could understand why she had remained loyal to him for so long. It had probably been only a matter of time anyway.
So this was it, then? He didn't have any friends left? He had lost his only true friend to his worst tormentors. He was itching to fix the situation, somehow, in any way possible.
But there was none.
He had already threatened to sleep outside the Gryffindor common room, and while it had made her come out to meet him, it hadn't completely had the desired effect – the two of them becoming friends again. Besides, if he was really going to sleep out here, who knew what those filthy so-called Marauders would do to him. Not that he cared what they did if it would get him his best friend back, but it wouldn't help.
Clenching his fists, he walked away, turning his own back to the Gryffindor common room. He scowled, knowing that he wasn't going to go back there anytime soon. He'd just stick to the Slytherin common room instead, hanging out with his dorm mates. They would be happy to hear that he was no longer hanging out with his Muggleborn best friend, but he would gladly give them all up if Lily would speak to him again.
Narrowing his eyes at nobody in particular, Severus went on, all the way down to the dungeons. Fine. She had chosen her path, and he was choosing his right now. She wasn't going to come around – neither was he.
This was how she wanted it to be? Then that was what she would get. He wouldn't complain or beg her for forgiveness anymore. He would become oblivious to her existence, despise her like he despised all Gryffindors, and not spare her a glance at any point in the future.
Who did he think he was kidding? Not himself, that much was certain. There was no way he could do all that. He had to try, though, at least for the time being. Perhaps later, after graduation, after the end of the war, they would meet under better circumstances, and he might be able to convince her to be his best friend again. For now, it was best that they'd go separate ways, and he'd hold on to the hope that someday, he'd be able to finally get it right.
