All I Ask of You
Disclaimer: The characters all belong to Mercedes Lackey. The song belongs to Andrew Lloyd Weber; it's from The Phantom of the Opera.
Author's Notes: This bit me when I was reading Magic's Pawn for the first time. I just thought the song fit the characters.Vanyel/Tylendel. Of course. As for POV, it's from the POV of whoever speaks after the verse. I really see them singing this song. And I only had to change one line, too! Yay!
No more talk of darkness;
Forget these wide-eyed fears.
I'm here-nothing can harm you,
My words will warm and calm you.
'Lendel chewed his lip, listening to everything Vanyel said. Beautiful Vanyel. Almost too beautiful. Not that *he* cared, but someone else might.
Let me be your freedom.
Let daylight dry your tears.
I'm here-with you, beside you
To guard you and to guide you.
He longed for Vanyel to allow him the right to protect the younger, beautiful boy. And yet.with all Vanyel was telling him, he doubted the other boy would ever accept him. But, how he wanted it!
All I ask is,
Every waking moment,
Turn my head with talk
Of summertime.
Vanyel avoided 'Lendel's eyes as he spilled out every detail of his life. He didn't want to see the other boy's reaction to his shame. After he had completely and totally broken down on 'Lendel's shoulder-literally, too-he didn't want to give 'Lendel another excuse to pity him. His pride couldn't stand that.
Say you need me
With you now and always
Promise me that all you say
Is true.
That's all I ask of you.
And yet.and yet. The way 'Lendel had told him he was beautiful.the way he could feel the older boy's eyes on him.he wondered if he was wrong to think what he was thinking. Shakily, shyly, he looked up and met 'Lendel's eyes.
Let me be your shelter.
Let me be your light.
You're safe, no one will find you.
Your fears are far behind you.
'It's working!' 'Lendel thought triumphantly. 'He's looking at me again! That's something.' "Go on," he said out loud.
All I want is freedom;
A world with no more night
And you, always beside me
To hold me and to hide me.
Seeing the look in 'Lendel's eyes, Vanyel quickly looked away. Quietly, he continued at the other boy's prompting.
Then say you'll
Share with me one love, one lifetime.
Let me lead you from
Your solitude.
Mentally, 'Lendel cursed when Vanyel looked away. He had to tread carefully with this boy. Beautiful Vanyel. Too bad he was so torn up inside. 'Lendel made a mental note to work on that.
Say you need me
With you, here, beside you.
Anywhere you go, let me
Go too.
Vanyel, that's all I ask of you
When Van had finished, 'Lendel took a deep breath, not exactly sure what to say to him. He finally decided to tell the stark truth. It was better that way.
All I ask for
Is one love, one lifetime.
Say the word
And I will follow you.
When he finished, Van didn't meet 'Lendel's eyes. He was afraid of the other boy's reaction. It wasn't until he heard 'Lendel whisper his name, softly, but not pitying.gently, tenderly, almost as if he was afraid Van would break, that Vanyel looked up again.
Share each day with me,
Each night, each morning.
Say you love me.
You know I do.
Love me,
That's all I ask of you.
When Van looked up again and met his eyes, 'Lendel smiled. "Vanyel. Beautiful, beautiful Vanyel. I told you before, and I'll say it again, you are everything I ever wanted. And that will never change."
Vanyel started, hope beginning to tremulously work its way into his voice. "You mean it?" he whispered, hardly daring the hope.
'Lendel nodded. And he held Vanyel. And he never wanted to let go.
Anywhere you go, let me go too.
Love me,
That's all I ask
Of you.
