"MAGGOTS!"
Jane Doe rose on unsteady legs, blood oozing from the countless
shrapnel and bullet holes perforating his tough hide. The crimson
liquid formed rivulets as it drizzled down his body, painting the hill
a morbid red under the moonless night.
"YOU ARE NOTHING BUT A BUNCH OF SCUM SUCKING HIPPIES!" A collective
silent gasp arose from the forces that opposed him.
"EVERY LAST ONE OF YOU WILL BE SHIPPED BACK TO PARIS ON THE FRUITY
FRENCH BOAT YOU ARRIVED IN!" The clicks and scrapes of reloading
rifles greeted his threat, masking the small sniffle which had
accompanied it.
"AS LONG AS SOMEONE KEEPS IT ALIGHT, THE FLAME OF FREEDOM WILL NEVER
PERISH!"
The boom of a rifle sounded, hitting him in the chest. Still, he remained atop the hill, smiling as he clung to a life
seeming apt to desert him.
"YOU'LL NEED MUCH MORE THEN THAT TO KILL FREEDOM!"
A cascade of hastily aimed shots retorted to his ideal, ripping the flesh from his
bones. Finally, he fell backwards, his bloodied and beaten body
bouncing down the slickened slope. A final response came to Jane as
his helmet was pulled over his eyes.
"They will."
