Identification
Korra walked briskly away from the podium as the press conference was just finished.
It was so extreme.
Why did Tarrlok announced that he was going to identify all non-benders in Republic City via registration? Sure, Amon and the Equalist's attacks were violent, but just because someone was a non-bender, doesn't mean that they're Equalist and committed terrorist acts.
A non-bender mother and her children offered her flowers yesterday, telling her that they were glad for the work she did. They weren't afraid of benders at all and were grateful for her protection. She smiled at that memory.
She heard Tarrlok's voice behind her. "Avatar Korra, I need to speak to you…"
She turned around to face the Councilman. "Why are you doing this? Identifying non-benders with documents and visas? This is extreme, you're gonna start a rouse."
"I'm only doing what's best for the city, Avatar, don't you think the city would be safer if we knew who were the non-benders?"
Her brow furrowed. "Just because they're non-benders, doesn't mean that they support Equalist, Tarrlok."
"Have you heard what's happening on the streets? Benders are being harassed just for being who they are. Some people have even put up signs on their shops not allowing benders to come in. The city is being segregated, and showing who's who will slow down crime rate in half. Bending families will be safe, think of the children who are benders."
"Your intentions are good, Tarrlok, and what you're doing is noble, but by the way you're going about this, you're just as extreme as the Equalist."
Tarrlok's brow furrowed.
"I may be the Avatar, and I can bend all four elements, but I also speak for the people who don't have our power. I'm not just the Avatar to the benders, I'm the Avatar to the world."
She walked up to the politician.
"You said you always wanted to be the saviour this city needs, but from what I've seen, shunning those who are different won't help bring the city back together."
Before she left him where he stood, she turned to look at him. "If you want to make a difference in the city… make it better for those who are different."
As the Avatar began to walk away, Tarrlok was amazed by Korra's insight for a seventeen year old girl. He thought all she thought about was pro-bending and boys, but she was more self-aware than he thought.
One thing that amazed him more though, was that she was the first person who ever stood up to him like that.
He then remembered he forgot to ask her if she wanted to come to the Task Force celebration tea with him.
Note
Political!Korrlok, yay! All this politics is reminding me of Trump and what's going on in the US. Impeccable timing.
