In the Beginning

"Careful," scolded Zachariah at Castiel's haste. "This is the beginning of a new age... I want to savor it."
Castiel nodded, unconcerned by the machinations of his superiors. His purpose was simply to follow sure, smite hard, and stay faithful.
Although...
Castiel gazed at their prize; a soul that sparkled despite its layers of accumulated sin, guilt, and self-loathing. It almost seemed to speak to him...
Realizing the others were preparing to depart, Castiel gently pulled the soul from the dirt and cradled it close.
God must surely intend great things for you, he thought, wondering at his sudden disquiet.
