New York City has been destroyed, the only remains of the once busy metropolis burned to ashes.
Loki realized the error of his ways long before the fight was over, only thinking of how much he had betrayed Jane.
He stood in the penthouse of Stark Tower, surveying the wreckage. His breathing had become labored, but he was able to focus on healing what was torn and broken. The only pain that remained was the hurt in his heart.
When he declared he would no longer be a part of this fight, the Chitari retaliated. Loki tried to fight them off as much as possible, eventually eradicating them.
The elevator chimed, and Loki turned slowly. His face drained, unable to face what walked toward him.
Jane.
She had been injured as well, but much more severely. She had cuts and bruises all over her petite body, and her arms wrapped around her middle. She stumbled out of the elevator, and Loki ran over to her. She fell into his embrace, and whimpered.
"L-Loki, I knew you'd be up here," she said, almost inaudibly. His chest felt tight. Her skin was ice cold, and her breathing was shaky. They both sank to the floor, and Jane gasped, the pain increasing tenfold. Loki turned her gently, and found that Jane was bleeding from her stomach. He placed his hand over it, attempting to heal it, but Jane weakly pushed it away.
"It's too late, Loki."
"No, Jane—"
"It's okay," she replied with a small smile, reaching up to touch his face. He held it against his cheek, the blood warm on his skin.
"Jane, I am so sorry. I—I never meant for any of this to happen. I did not want—"
"Don't be sorry. What's done is done. I've already forgiven you."
Loki let out a sob, and tried once again to close up her wound. Jane only pushed his hand away once more.
"Jane, I beg you, please, let me help you."
"Why, Loki? It would be a waste of your energy."
"Because I'm afraid. I'm afraid to be without you," he said thickly, tears now falling freely.
A few moments of silence passed as Jane focused on her breathing.
"Do…do you remember what you told me once, when I was afraid?"
Loki searched his memories, but shook his head when he could not recall it.
"You told me that we love the stars more than we fear the dark. Don't fear the dark because I'll always be among the stars," Jane said softly. She let out a strangled cry as the pain increased.
"Please, Jane," he begged. "Please don't leave me."
"I'll never leave you."
Those were the last words he would ever hear from his love as her body went slack in his arms.
