Prologue
She tossed and turned in her sleep as she watched Yashima-sama, the god of the Yashima shrine leave them once more. How could this have happened? How could one single love confession make a god leave?
Of course she had known that it was forbidden for a mortal to love a god and vice versa but Yurie-sama had fallen in love with Kenji Ninomiya and hence had broken that rule. However Yurie was an extraordinary goddess by even the standards of the gods.
She had nullified the effects of the poverty god, had managed to turn their town into an amusement park so that their revenue would increase and had even managed to evade a punishment that was customary when a god did something he or she shouldn't have.
She had never felt envious of the older girl until now. Why did she have to get everything? For once why didn't she lose something precious to her? She might be a god but that didn't mean that she should have everything.
As her eyes fell upon the god she noticed that he was fading. He was leaving the mortal world for good this time. Her eyes were brimming with tears as she choked out "No! Yashima-sama! Don't leave!"
Watching the gateway between the two worlds close, she ran up to it and began pounding with her fists on it.
"Let him come back! Bring him back! He never did anything wrong!"
"He is not going to come back. When a mortal…."
Miko turned around and said "I know that! However onee-san's friend didn't fade away! Who are you anyway?"
The woman's brown hair gleamed with an other-worldliness and her stormy-blue eyes seemed to shimmer and shift colours. She said "That is because she is special. How rude of me. My name is Naru-Kami and I am the goddess of thunder. I have also been given temporary duty of being the gatekeeper between our worlds. I am responsible for who goes in and goes out".
"Then you can bring him back right?"
Her eyes seemed to light up at the prospect of seeing him again but the light faded when Naru sadly said "I can. However are you ready to bear the cost?"
"The cost?"
"Yes. If you truly wish to be with him again you must give up your mortality and become a goddess. You will turn into a spirit and will no longer be able to communicate with your family or friends."
She stammered "That… That's impossible. I can't….."
The woman seemed to vanish before her eyes and as she did, she whispered "One week. That is all the time you will get."
Miko woke up with a jerk as sunlight played upon her face, staring into space as she recalled the woman's words. Was she really ready to give up everything for an unrequited love?
