A small little boy walked on the shores of a lake. He sat on a rock near the water and stared at his reflection. The small boy shed small tears.

"What's wrong," said a voice. "What's wrong, little girl?" The boy glared up at the voice. He saw a pretty lady, with blue-ish hair and brown-ish amethyst eyes. She then gasped, "Oh, my! You a little boy! What's your name, young man?" The boy smiled a cute little smile.

He then replied, "My name is Minamino Shuichi." He smiled even wider now that he someone to talk to. "Who're you?"

"My name is Botan. I am the protector of this lake," said the protector. "Why are you so sad, Shuichi-chan?" The older lady smiled a sorry smile. The little boy then said, "I will tell you if you play with me, please, Miss Botan?" "Such a cute little boy with manners. I just can't say no! Of course, little Shuichi." The boy blushed at the compliment. His poppy red hair flowing in the wind, and his emerald green eyes low.

The protector and the little boy played in the water and laughed. They swam around and told jokes until the sun started to set. Shuichi walked onto the grass and took a deep breath. This was the first time he ever had a friend. Botan sat next to the little human and said, "You said if I played with you, you would tell me why you were sad. I did play with you for many hours now. Please, Shuichi-chan, tell me why," she said. "Why were you so sad?"

The little boy's face turned shy-like. He took the Botan's hand and said, "I never had a friend. You were the only person who would play with me." Shuichi let go of her hand. He started to walk away. A few steps back, Botan said, "Why won't the children of the village play with you, Shuichi- chan?"

"They think. They think. They think," he stuttered. "They think I look like a girl. You even thought I was a girl..." Shuichi's sad little tears started dripping on the sand. "That's why no one likes me. The boys hate me because the girls think I'm one of them and they pay attention to me. The girls hate me because the boys hate me."

The older woman opened her arms for the boy, "Come here, my little friend. I have to go soon." Shuichi ran to his friend. She hugged him tight in her arms and sigh, "I will give you a permanent friend." She then saw fox ears pop up and arise in front of her, more in her arms, a male demon with gold eyes and silver hair. "Meep..." she squeaked, feeling pressure on her. The male was blushing but said, "I thank you for the present you are about to give me. I've never had a permanent friend... ...Unless you would like to be it." Botan blushed and said, "You are a kitsune. But... you are also human." She turned to him and touched his cheek. A few tear drops remained. She said a few words and held out her hand. The demon hesitated and did the same. Soon, a small little egg appeared. Botan smiled and said, "Here you go. Now, you must tell me your youkai name in return."

"Kurama... My name is Youko Kurama," said the demon. "Thank you for the ...thing"

A giggle came from the older woman, "The older youkai is ruder." She grinned and said. "This is an egg. It will only hatch if you care for it. When it hatches, come back here and I will make it yours." She kissed the older Kurama. He then became the young Minamino Shuichi again. "Domo arigato, Botan-dono." And the protector walked him home.
