There it was, soft, quiet, but still there. She heard it whenever she would lay her head on his chest. His heartbeat. This time they were laying in bed together. Tonight was a colder night so they were especially close to each other. She shifted in bed to be in a more comfortable position.

"Hey," She asked. "Do you hear that? That's your life and you have to promise to never let it stop. Promise?"

"I promise." He told her locking eyes.

A week later it came. She found it while checking the post. The letter from the Doctor. She knew something was wrong but she never knew what it was. But now she knew and she hated it. Her love. Her one and only love. He was sick. Sick with what? Not even the Doctors knew. All they knew is that it was in his heart.

The next day she decided. She won't bring it up. What she will do though. Is she will make sure her love survives. She'll go to the Doctors. She will have them give him her heart.

Two weeks later he got the call. They had found him a donor heart. The next day they went. He had to get his surgery. They were so happy because of that call. That night. Unknowingly their last night together they had made the sweetest love with each other.

The surgery went smoothly. He woke up in his hospital room alone. His face fell as he pushed the call button for the nurse. When she came he asked her. "Where is my fiance? I need to see her." The nurse didn't answer all she did was give him an envelope then leave.

"My Love" The outside of the envelope read. His heart fell at seeing those words. He continued on.

"My Dearest Love,

When you get this I will already be gone from you and here. Please don't be sad for me I wanted to do this. I NEEDED TO DO THIS. Do you remember our promise that we made almost a month ago? Well if not it's okay but I do. You promised me that you wouldn't die. Now I know that isn't completely possible but I know that I don't have to see you die and that is all I wanted. I truly though wanted to live with you. I wanted for us to grow our own family. I wanted the pitter patter of small feet on christmas morning rushing downstairs to open presents. I wanted romantic dates in the moonlight. I wanted to grow old with you. But I couldn't of had this either way because one of us would die. But I am happy enough knowing that you will still get that life. But you need to promise me again. Stay alive and don't stop living.

Farewell from,

Your Dear Lover

He sat there. He sat there with tears streaming from his eyes like an endless fountain. He remembered the promise. He remembered all of the promises. But he still didn't understand why. But he didn't need to understand. He knew what he had to do. He had to live. He had to be happy and have a new life now. He had to make her wish come true even if she wouldn't be there with him.
