Prologue
All was silent and peaceful in the small city of Marseille. The torch fires that normally illuminated the city at night had all died out, leaving the moonlight to be the only light source in the pitch-black darkness. A young man of about eighteen years of age jerked awake in the middle of the night in cold sweat, his heart pounding and his throat dry with thirst. After a few seconds of taking in his surroundings, he sat up in bed and blindly reached for his water flask that sat on the wooden stool beside him. His fingers grasped around it, but when he brought it to his lips, not a single drop of water spilt out. He got out of bed and headed for the door quietly, trying not to wake the sleeping figure in the neighboring room as he passed. But his younger twin sister, being a light sleeper, woke up at the slightest creek of the floorboard.
"Alec?" she yawned. "Where are you going?"
"Just outside, for a bit of fresh air. Get some more sleep, Azalie."
Surely enough, he could hear the light breathing of his sister as he picked up a small wooden basin on the way, and silently left the house.
Once he was outside, he leaned against the wall, resting his head back on the hard surface. Another sigh escaped his lips.
"Another night of suffocating torment, huh…" he muttered. "At this rate, I won't have much energy to be of help to anyone."
Putting the basin on the ground, Alec hovered a hand above it, and with a slight rotating motion of his wrist the basin was immediately filled with pure-blue water. He knelt down in front of it and scooped some water with his hands, raising it to his mouth and enjoying the feeling of the cool liquid quenching his thirst. Then he splashed his face a few times to get rid of the tiredness.
The basin of water reflected him with the moon behind him. He stared at his reflection which mirrored his frown. His golden blond hair, his blue-grey eyes, light olive toned complexion… How much longer would he be able to continue on living as 'Alec'? These dreams, these nightmares he was having recently, were not like the ones he'd had in the past. Alec knew that these ones had some kind of significant meaning, as if someone was showing him these dreams to tell him that they would occur in the near future, that he needed to prepare. What would happen to his beloved sister then? Having lost their parents at a young age, the twins only had each other. Of course, the people in their village were kind and had cared for them, treating them like their own children, but what would Azalie do if she lost her one and only remaining family? Sighing once again for the third time that night, Alec swept his hand across the surface of the water in frustration, causing a ripple that blurred out his other watery self.
Leaning back against the wall, he stared at the water basin and raised his hand, moving it hypnotically until a small amount of swirling water hovered above his outstretched palm.
How much longer would his people get to live in this silent peace? His fate, his existence, would all be decided on the night of the Red Moon. He just hoped that no harm would come to the people he loved the most.
