Rowing For Gold
Heather Stanning was on the water at Eton Dorney, just having a casual row, a warm down after training. She was told that today, after training, she'd be told who her partner was ready to train for the World championships and Olympics.
She rowed back to the boathouse and carried her boat back and put it away. Then she went towards the cafe by the river which was where she would meet her coach and her partner. As soon as she got there, she spotted her coach and her new partner sat at a table drinking coffee. There was one for Heather. She sat down at the table. Her coach Andy introduced Heather to her new partner. "Heather, meet Helen Glover. Helen, meet Heather Stanning" They shook hands and Heather quickly looked at Helen up and down to see what she was working with. Heather said "So how did you come into rowing?" Helen said "I got onto this Sporting Giants programme and got into rowing that way. I used to be a PE teacher. You?" "Oh I got into it through the Army. I'm an army captain based at Larkhill, Wiltshire".
Andy said "I'll leave you two to talk". He left and Heather and Helen carried on talking. The day after, when they had finished training, they went out for a drink together and got to know each other. Heather was beginning to think that her coach definitely knew who she would get on with well.
