Annie Campbell sat in the middle of the deserted, tears in her eyes, her camera around her neck.
Life was too short. She had always known that. But the past two weeks had proven it to be true.
Her parents had died when she was a little girl, and she and her older brother Geoff went to live with their strict grandfather, on the outskirts of Summer Bay. When the old man passed away, both her and her brother had gone to Summer Bay to live with Irene Roberts, a registered foster carer. With Irene, they had got Belle.
Belle Taylor was a teenager who came to the Bay to find her birth mother. Instead, she found a whole bunch of new friends, and a loving foster mother.
To be honest, Annie had been a little scared of Belle, in the beginning. Belle was older and did things she would never dream of doing. And for that, she admired her. She looked up to her, and Belle liked that.
Belle thought of Annie as a little sister, and Annie told her everything. In return, Belle told her stories and, gave her advice, everything a big sister should do. They had both been through so much, and that was what united them.
Annie was there for Belle when Aden nearly left her at the alter- and it broke Belle's heart to have to admit to Irene, Geoff and Annie that she was dying. Cancer. It was a destructive kind of cancer, and it was too far gone to get treatment.
Annie was heartbroken at the news.
Belle was hospitalized, as the cancer ate its way through the young woman's body. One of the hardest goodbyes she had to say was to Annie.
"I love you", Annie whispered, choking back tears.
"I love you too", Belle had whispered back, kissing her 'sister' on the top of the head. Then she reached for her beloved camera that she had used to take thousand of photos- a lot of them of her and Annie. "Annie, I want you to keep this. For me".
That's what it took for the two of them to start sobbing.
Annie, with Belle holding her arms steady, pointed the camera at the two of them as they smiled shakily, and pressed the shutter down. they both knew they'd be very puffy eyed, red faced and tearstained, but it was a photo Annie treasured.
She was also given an envelope.
"Read it when I'm gone", Belle told her, allowing herself to cry. Annie cried with her, as the huddled together on the hospital bed.
The younger girl had sobbed and sobbed when Belle passed away, the very next day. She was in the arms of her husband and best friend, Aden Jeffries, and had died peacefully, but that didn't change anything.
The funeral was worse. The entire town was shaken and upset- Belle was the life of the party and everyone loved her.
That night, Annie had read the letter Belle had given her.
Dearest Annie,
I cannot express the love I have for you. You've been like the little sister I've never had, ever since you first came to Summer Bay. You've been through so much, Annie, but you still stayed so strong. Even when I'm gone, you'll stay strong for Irene, Geoff and especially Aden, because I know you.
I love you, sis, forever and always. Your memory will live on forever in my heart.
With all the love in the world,
Belle
Annie had cried herself to sleep, curled up in a ball, clutching her pillow. But Belle was right, as usual. She had tried her hardest to stay strong for Irene- who had just lost a daughter- and Aden, who had lost the love of his life.
"You're sweet, Annie", Aden had mumbled, as she comforted him. "No wonder Belle was so fond of you".
Life was too short, but Annie Campbell knew her sister would be looking out for her. It's what sisters did for each other.
