In Britain, Richard III's reburial is taking place. From the 22nd to the 26th March, Richard will be held in Leicester Cathedral where people can visit his coffin. Then, on the 26th, he will be interred in his tomb.
I wrote this as I watched the coffin pass down Leicester's streets. The sight of so many people throwing white roses onto his passing coffin was incredibly touching and I felt compelled to write this poem for Richard III's memory.
It makes me honoured to share his name.
Loyalte me Lie.
~ Richard
Many men come down the crowded streets.
Praise the Holy God as the carriage past Us meets!
Where down Leicester's gay streets do roses of angels fall onto the ground;
As the coffin of the King most missed does trundle slowly down.
Welcome Peers, welcome all, to Our merry din,
And watch with wonder and eyes all fixed as the King returns to Us once more.
The White Rose of York does shine once more!
Long hail the memory of the brother of Edward, be he the Fourth!
Britain's people speak out and be joyful;
The King has returned to Us!
Let His memory be hailed as the Sovereign Lord of Us He was!
Though His actions of such can be argued;
Sweet Hasting's blood doth stain the black, grey ground:
Of such a uncertain, fearful time.
And two young boys, innocent of any crime, with silenced voices try to cry out to You and Us,
Let us not forget His actions were of such a fearful time, and cannot be completely blackened.
When aTudor's head did be placed with that Crown
On fateful Bosworth, O woeful, empty Bosworth!
Was His fate thus sealed?
Or were His actions already sealed in His life?
But we stand here now: England's children, Britain's children
Who watched as His remains were found, such a giddy thing!
Something We would never think to happen!
And We watch now as He is laid to rest, finally lain to rest.
And that is good and that is now.
So go in peace, much maligned one.
And hope do we that Your name can be cleared of the crimes that Thou can'st not be certain of.
Away from Bosworth did Your soul fly and now it does once more.
Fly!
Fly!
And to Heaven Thou shall go!
Richard, Ricardus Rex, God wills it so!
The return of the King has come.
