CHAPTER 1
Hey guys, this is my first fanfiction, so please tell me what you think! It would really like any criticism you have, but obviously praise would be much nicer. Disclaimer: I do not own any characters from Disney or Harry Potter. The only ones that are mine are Nerissa/Nerida, Bahari, Ehris, Isaac and Nalu. (Also I renamed Albus Severus, because it annoyed me, so it is now Remus Rubeus) Have fun!
James Sirius - Hawaii
"Where am I?" the angel called from my feet. She must have been a fallen angel, as she had looked so perfect with her eyes closed softly in a deep sleep, yet bore no wings on her back. "What is going on?" she called again. A blue sheet wrapped around her nearly naked body as my mother warmed her. The angel's wet hair stuck to her face as my mother helped her to her feet. The angel quickly fell back to the ground, as if not used to walking, I guess angels only need to fly. My father helped my mother carry her back to the house we were staying in, here in Hawaii. She had drifted up from the North Pacific Ocean, completely naked in the wash. My mother ran up to see if she was breathing, while my father ran to get something to cover her up. My mother was surprised she hadn't drowned, as she was unconscious and breathing, yet had no water in her lungs.
My siblings and I paced the front porch, anxiously awaiting news of her health. My mother opened the door and invited us in. We piled into the small room my mother was using as an infirmary. My mother is a healer, often coming home to heal my father, the Powerful Auror, the One, the Only, Harry Potter. Mother always jokes about how everyone in the Wizarding world is in utter awe over our father, when we have seen him singing lullabies and changing nappies, quite undignified. Being the oldest, I am expected to live up to his legacy, my father isn't expecting it, but the entire world is. Since my younger brother Remus looks exactly like my father, some expectation is on him, but the focus is on me. Remus is the Golden Boy, anyway, so it doesn't matter if he has some expectations on him, he will live up to them, I most likely won't. Sometimes I just want to be a plain wizard, which is weird, since no wizard is plain, we have magical powers, but just normal. Lily, my baby sister has no expectation on her. Well, she is expected to be beautiful, but there is no worry about that, she looks identical to mother, so there is no problem there. Mum told us that the girl will be alright. She also told us the she has amnesia, meaning she has lost all memory of who she is. Father suggested we call her Nerissa, meaning 'of the sea' or 'sea nymph'. She stirred in her sleep, and slowly opened her eyes. They were clear blue, just like the ocean she had just been in. She started to show some recognition in her eyes, instead of just plain fear. "Where am I?" she asked, it was seemingly her favourite question. Her voice sounded like the waves crashing against the sea on a stormy day, not good.
"She still needs some rest, Jimmy, can you stay with her, while we find some clothes she may fit." my parents went into their bedroom and I could see them filtering through my mother's suitcase. I looked back over to Nerissa and smiled. She sat up slightly, carefully covering up her body. She looked down at her legs quizzically, as if she had never seen them before. She swung them around, giggling slightly. I smiled, she looked so care-free and innocent, you don't see a lot of teenagers like that. I wish I could be like that again, free of responsibilities, then again, she has got amnesia, she may have a tonne of responsibilities she has forgotten about.
Mum came back with a pair of her old painting jeans and t-shirts, and gave them to Nerissa.
"Can you tell us where you're from?" Dad spoke loudly to Nerissa.
Mum swatted at him. "She is not deaf." she hissed at him. I laughed at my dad's stupidity. "Hey, sweetie. Are you starting to remember anything from your past?" Nerissa shook her head furiously. Then, she stopped suddenly, and nodded. "Oh, yeah? What is it?"
"A song. My mother would sing it to me. Something about a hot crustacean band or something along those lines." her voice was still coarse, but softening up slightly.
"Can you remember your mother's name, or even what she looked like?"
"No, just that her voice sounded beautiful, and that an old friend taught her that song." Her face when she couldn't remember nearly broke me, I was almost worried she may burst into tears, but she didn't, thankfully.
"Hey it's okay. You're going to be okay." Dad turn to mum, "I'll call Neville, he is a certified foster parent. He'll look after her, until school restarts. He could probably get her into Hogwarts somehow, without too much trouble from the Ministry and the remaining pure-blood supremacists."
"It doesn't matter about the supremacists, she'll be bullied anyway for not having magic at all, no magic heritage." I heard a giggle again, disrupting my parents' argument. I looked over to see a bubble of water floating over to Nerissa, her palm out-stretched. It seemed like she was controlling it. She lifted her other hand and made a stretching movement. The bubble lengthened and stretched into a small, snake-like figure, with fins, an eel. She tapped the eel's head and it swam off around the room.
"You were saying?" I commented to my mother, who was too busy staring at the water eel in awe.
"Honey, go make that call. I'm sure Neville will be delighted that he will get a magical child to look after." She couldn't tear her eyes away from the eel. It swam back to Nerissa and burst against the sheet. My mother pushed us out of the room to Nerissa could get dressed, and I could hear dad talking to Professor Longbottom on the telephone (they had recently installed one in the Headmaster's Office at Hogwarts, for Muggle-borns to contact their parents if they were afraid and/or allergic to owls).
I wonder if Nerissa has an actual family out there who really cares about her and is looking for her right now.
Melody - Atlantica, Off the Coast of Denmark
"Where could Nerida be? It has been three days, and she hasn't even messaged us. When will she return?" I asked my husband Nalu. Nerida never leaves without telling us where she is going. "What if she ran away?"
"She would never run away from us. She loves us dearly."
"Yes, but she is so special. No one has ever seen powers like hers before, not even Grandfather Triton. Life under the sea is the world she loves, but unlike the generations before me, I have not restricted her from going up to the shore. Mother and Father are often up there to visit us, but they would message us if they had seen her without us messaging first." I sobbed into Nalu's shoulder.
"Darling, we will find our little child. We have scoured all the oceans, she must be on land. Eric and Ariel will be searching the land, they love her nearly as much as we do, and will do anything in their power to help us." Nalu wrapped his arms around me as I wept. It is amazing that you can cry at the bottom of the ocean.
"Melody?" mother called out.
"What are you doing down here?" I was annoyed that she was not out there looking for my daughter.
"I'm sorry we do not have as much influence in the upper world as we do down here. I have come to take you and Nalu up to the shore, so you can help us with the search as well. Please remember that Nerida has those unique powers, so is easily recognisable. I have asked my royal friends to spread the news and search for Nerida, but I lack confidence in whether they will do much to help us. Quickly, you and Nalu must come ashore if we are to find your daughter."
"Is that Ariel I hear?"
"Sebastian!" my mother called out to old crab swimming along with his five children. "Flounder!" the fish following dragged behind, weighed down by six or seven fish.
"Hello, Sebastian, will come and search with us for Nerida?"
"Oh, she is just like her mother, and her grandmother, always running off into trouble, where it would be so much easier if you just stayed where you were meant to. I hope there is no evil sea witch this time. I am too old for this-"
"Come on, Sebastian!" I called back down the corridor.
We swam down the corridor and up to the surface room. We swam to the surface, to meet dad and Max, his old English sheep dog, speaking to the butler.
"We will search Denmark, then the Netherlands, Belgium, France then the UK. If she isn't there we will spread out." dad was very adamant that we do this in that order. "Where did you last see her?"
"Off the coast of California, she wanted to go visit my parents off the coast of Hawaii for the holidays, but she never arrived. My family is doing all they can in that area, but she has not been found. Some of my friends on land are searching, but it is a holiday resort, so she may have been taken anywhere." Nalu said sadly, and I could tell he thought it was his fault. "If only we had told her to come back to Atlantis, instead of leaving her to go off on her own. She is only fifteen."
"Well, she must stay near a large source of water, or her skin will dry up. We must search around the coast, and large lakes, she will most likely be around there. I have most of Denmark looking already, and quite a lot of France as well." dad said.
"Daddy has sent messages to all the fresh water merfolk he knows, not the most pleasant of merfolk, but they are trustworthy, so if they see anything they will tell us." my mother has an obvious distaste for freshwater merfolk.
"Nalu and I will search for Nerida in Belgium, then we will go to the UK. Mum and Dad, you search the Netherlands and meet us in England. We will see you there." I said, then dove into the ocean. Nalu followed me swiftly and we sped off to Belgium.
"She will be alright, there are plenty of humans who are kind to people like us. It is lucky that she can transform her tail into legs at will. It will help her blend in on land, and hopefully survive. Although, it will make her harder to spot, especially if she changes her appearance. Her tail is so unique everyone can tell her apart mainly from that, but she, in herself, is a very unique woman with plenty of common sense and self-awareness. She will be fine up there." Nalu reassured me.
I couldn't help imagine what Nerida must be feeling at this point. She would be missing us so much, and she must have been kidnapped, or killed, or just plain lost, for her not to message us about her whereabouts.
She was a special child, and her abilities gave her an edge over the other merfolk her age, along with her royal heritage, both above the sea and below it. We are still unsure of how far her abilities stretch, but apparently she has just the right ratio of human to mermaid to allow her to have these special powers. We know she has full control of water, and water based elements, but we are unsure of any other elements. We are not supposed to go too near fire as it dehydrates us, and we could easily die, so it is out of the question for us to try controlling fire, and it is hard to control earth and swim at the same time. Air control is hard to see, and there is so much wind on the coast, it is hard to see if you can actually control air.
I hope she isn't scared out of her mind.
Remus Rubeus - Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry
I have never seen my brother so anxious. He was pacing back and forth. We had got to know Nerissa over the summer, as Professor Longbottom had been staying with us, to help himself get acquainted with Nerissa before he takes her off to an unknown place. Nerissa learnt to walk quickly, but loved swimming in the lake next to our house. Nerissa got on great with Neville, especially as she shared his love for plants. Her gave her a magical flower that alerts you to carbon monoxide and other poisonous gases in the air, by screaming "POISON! THERE IS POISON IN THE AIR!" at you over and over again, until the coast is clear. She laughed and thanked him for it.
"Neville, be aware that she uses wand-less magic. I have seen her control water by simply willing it. She seems to have the same abilities as an average witch, but prefers not to use a wand. It seems she loves the water, so must have a constant source, I'm sure the Black Lake will be suitable." Mother is very concerned about how Nerissa will fit in here at Hogwarts. Jimmy assures her he will look after Nerissa, but Mum is unconvinced.
It is the first of September and everyone is about to join us here at Hogwarts. Professor Longbottom asked us to help Nerissa settle in, and get her house sorted, since she hasn't been here before. I wonder which house she will get into. She may be a Ravenclaw, she is talented and constantly eager to learn. I guess without the knowledge of who she used to be, she wants to make up for it with the knowledge of what she can become. She may be a Hufflepuff, she is always looking out for us, to make sure we are okay, even while we are extremely worried about her. She also loves all animals and is extremely kind to everyone. She is sort of courageous, as she is unafraid of some dangerous or disgusting animals, so she may be a Gryffindor.
Professor Longbottom brought the Sorting Hat down from the Headmaster's Office, and the three legged stool. He gestured for Nerissa to sit down. She skipped to the seat and plopped down. The hat covered her eyes and I remember when the sorting hat did this for me.
Hello young Potter. You are destined to be looked at as the child of the boy who lived. You look just like him but your heart strays.
I shivered at the thought that my heart may be evil, but father had reassured me that I most definitely was not.
You're cunning is measured above all else, so Slytherin would be the best choice for you, however Gryffindor holds the courage you possess. The choice is up to you which one to choose.
Dad had told me I had a choice in which house I wanted, but I didn't think it would come to this, a choice between what house I believe to be good, or what house the sorter believes is better for me.
SLYTHERIN!
Cheers sprung up from the table at the end!
I revelled in the memory, as the Sorting Hat stayed wrapped around Nerissa's head. I wonder how long it is going to take. She must be very diverse if it is taking this long, of course we have only seen a small part of her potential in the three weeks we have known her.
I wonder if she will share Jimmy's house, Hufflepuff. Jimmy got really worried when he couldn't talk to her, and had become very protective over her, so it would be better for the entire school, if he was able to keep contact with her, at least most of the time. If he doesn't he has warned Professor Longbottom that he will probably blow a fuse.
"Hufflepuff!" the hat exploded. I spun around to see Jimmy walking forward to hug Nerissa, and welcome her into the house. I smiled and hugged her as well when he was done.
"Now we must get to the Great Hall, before the others arrive, or they will be waiting for us."
We ran down to the hall and I said goodbye to Nerissa and Jimmy, and sat down at the Slytherin table. A moment later everyone else ran in. I made eye contact with Scorpius, the Malfoy kid, and he sat down next to me. Rose ran over afterwards, and soon fixed a pointed glare on Scorpius, who simply smirked back. They are so meant to be together, but Uncle Ron will never allow it. Aunt Hermione is trying to convince him that Scorpius is a good guy, he is my best friend after all.
I asked them how their holiday was, and if anything interesting happened. Then I told them about Nerissa, and her magical powers, well more powerful than usual. Rose wracked her brain trying to remember if anything like this had happened before.
It hadn't.
Rose and Scorpius went into a quick battle of wits and increasingly creative insults. What else are two fourteen-year-olds supposed to do with all that sexual tension. Of course they never admit that they're destined to be together, but everyone knows they are.
I looked over at Jimmy and Nerissa, and I thought, they would make a really nice couple.
Ehris - Hufflepuff 5th Year Dorm Room (Girls)
5. Having four girls in a room was bad enough, but 5? I hope this Nerissa isn't superficial like the others. I may actually have a friend in this dorm this year. Maybe.
I walked up to Nerissa, who was surrounded by the Superficials. She looked extremely uncomfortable for someone surrounded by populars, just my kind of friend.
I smiled and she grimaced back, pleading to be removed from the hell she was living in. 'Oh, do you curl your hair?' 'It looks so pretty!' 'How much fake tan are you wearing, nobody has skin that tanned without fake tan?' I pulled her out of the pit she was being swallowed into and stuck my tongue out to the girls who were death staring my back.
'Hi, my name is Ehris.' I said to her.
'Elpis?' She asked, why can no one say my name?
'No, eh-riss.' I replied, it wasn't uncommon for me to do this.
'Oh, sorry, Ehris. Thank you for back there, I am Nerissa.'
'So, where you from?' It was a simple question, I didn't expect here to burst into tears and run downstairs.
I sprinted after her, asking what was wrong, to find her in the arms of none other than Jimmy Potter. The quiet boy, who is top of every class, but does very little work. He is most often seen in the library, or by the lake, with some sort of notebook and a pencil. He doesn't really have many friends, other than me and Isaac. Where is Isaac anyway?
'Ehris, what did you say?' He called from across the common room.
I walked over, quickly, tripping over several first years, to where Nerissa was, 'Sorry, I didn't mean to do anything to upset her, but- I- I just asked her where she was from.'
'Oh, I should have told you, Nerissa has amnesia, she can't remember anything about her past.'
Oh no. I had no idea that that was the reason she burst into tears. She has no idea where she comes from. Oh, how I wish I could be like her. Forget my past, my heritage. No one can know what I am, or who I was.
I felt my wings press against my back. Why does this have to come today? My wings always get super sensitive when I am on my period. I took Nerissa back upstairs and asked her to wait on her bed.
I grabbed a pair of knickers and ran into the bathroom. I shoved the tampon in and mopped up all I could. If you are reading this and are uncomfortable, suck it up and move forward. If we are witches, how come we haven't invented a spell to cure us of this evil that is periods. Or at least prevent the horror that is cramps.
I left the bathroom and walked over to Nerissa's bed. She was laying down, staring at the ceiling. I flopped down next to her. We spent most of the night describing our summers. I made sure not to mention anything before that.
The next morning I woke up to the feeling of fresh water pouring down onto my face. I opened my eyes to see Nerissa looking worriedly at me, her hands outstretched in my direction.
'Sorry, I was controlling the water when something ran over my foot. I lost my concentration and dropped the water.' Nerissa really was very sorry that she had dumped water on me.
I sat up and heard a gasp. I guess I forgot to tell Nerissa about the wings. I turned to the mirror and stretched them out.
Scarlett feathers sprung from my back and stretched out. Cream feathers unfolded beneath them, and the silver, white one extended from them. The eagle wings melded with my arms as I swung them back and forth, lifting my feet off the ground. Nerissa stared at me in astonishment.
'Sorry about the colouring, they are usually just white, but whenever it is that time of the month they just turn red and get bigger, harder to hide.' I blushed as I said this, which is understandable, considering no one else knew, and one of the Populars rolled over in her sleep, snoring, and fell off the bed. She didn't wake up though, thankfully.
We stumbled down to breakfast, quickly packing our bag and greeting Jimmy and Isaac in the common room. Jimmy introduced Isaac to Nerissa and we sprinted off to breakfast.
We all sat down, and Isaac said some sort of sexist, genderist, racist, elitist, queerphobic comment, and being the person I am, I called him out about it.
'Why are you so grouchy?' Said Jimmy. I filtered around in my bag before I found what I was looking for. I pulled the white, cotton object out and showed it to him, he flinched back in horror.
'This is a tampon. You stick it in your vagina to soak up the blood. The blood is caused by the inner lining of your uterus wripping itself apart. This also happens to give you cramps. Those cramps are small simulations of what our pregnancy contractions will be like. So, forgive me if I'm a little grouchy.'
Jimmy blushed and got up from the table, banging his knees on the underside of the table. He started off down the aisle, then turned around and grabbed his bag and sprinted off blushing the whole way. Isaac chased after him. Nerissa and I looked at each other and laughed.
'That was a bit intense, don't you think?' Nerissa asked as we stood up to go to our first class.
'I'm just sick of boys being uncomfortable around it, they need to learn to get a grip, it is a natural process, most girls do it. So, they just need to get the hang of talking casually about it.' We left the Great Hall and began down the corridor to Potions.
'So, what can you remember about your past?'
