In the dark of night when there is nothing but silence, Sasuke dreams of nothing else but of killing Itachi.
Revenge has been Sasuke's only dream since he was eight years old and still a small, unformed child; nothing else matters in the grand scheme of things. It is his one true goal in life; Sasuke has never thought, never dreamed of life after he kills his brother, of what happens after breath is extinguished from him.
His life doesn't matter to him anymore. No earthly pursuit can eradicate the memory and the truth of what Itachi had done to him, of what he has taken away from him; reminders exist everywhere, tugging cruelly on the edges of Sasuke's consciousness. Families interacting and laughing dredge up haunting ghosts of mother, father, aunt, uncle; spectral screams echo through the silent, dusty rooms of the Uchiha compound out of lazy, buzzing summer afternoons. It consumes every waking moment of Sasuke's life, and beyond into the unconscious.
Sasuke's dreamscape is a weird, fantastical place of dark imagery where every night is a battle and every battle has a different outcome. Sometimes a kunai or a serrated, metal snowflake will end Sasuke's life; sometimes, Itachi falls spewing blood, eyes opaque, enigmatic and unapologetic to the last.
Sasuke knows that he will never find any joy in life. Itachi has taken from him much more than just his family. He has taken his heart and the larger part of his being as well. Sasuke has felt no joy or happiness since the day his parents died; where happiness should be, there is just a hole, a deep, hollow spot that bleeds black fumes. It is a bottomless pit that demands food, never letting its host alone.
And Sasuke doesn't care anymore. He is more than willing to feed the gangrenous sore and aggravate his wounds. Happiness and joy are small sacrifices to be made in pursuit of revenge. Sasuke will give up whatever he has to, no matter the cost, in order to make his brother pay.
Revenge is the only reality of Sasuke's life.
He will kill Itachi. Nothing else matters.
Nothing.
