Chapter 1
Beep…beep…beep…the heart monitor kept beeping. The same sound every 2 seconds. Everything was silent except the monitor. I sat on a hospital chair waiting for some sign of my mother to wake up, but for some reason it felt like she wouldn't be waking up. My sister, Hope, was in the cafeteria getting something to eat because the nurse said she should have something to eat since we been here for like 6 hours and it was already like morning. The nurse, Angie I think, said that I should I have something too, but I was too depressed to eat anything. I looked over at the digital clock on my mom's bedside table. It read 8:34 A.M. Then I stood up and walked slowly to my mother's side.
She looked peaceful. The expression on her face would make you think she was just sleeping, but in reality she was in a coma from a car accident. I don't really have a close relationship with her as I like to have, but we still get along okay. I could see her chest go up and down. 'I guess that's good she's still breathing.' Her red hair was all over the pillow and her arms had a few scratches. The worse was done with her head, the paramedics said that she was unconscious when they got her out of the car.
"Ma'am."
I turned around and saw that nurse. I read her name tag again. It read Anna. 'Anna, my bad'
"Yes?"
"I think it would be good if you did get something to eat," she said in a concern tone.
"I'm not hungry-"
"You said that an hour ago, I recommend getting something to eat right away." The nurse's eyes didn't leave mine, and I had a feeling that if I didn't go she would force me somehow.
I sighed and I went with her.
The cafeteria was huge with tables everywhere. There was a buffet table over in the right corner and a desert table and also a drink table right next to it. I saw my little sister sitting by the desert table. I walked towards her and sat down right next to her.
"How's Mama?"
Mama…that's what my sister always called her even though she is 10 right now.
"Nothing changed." I replied trying to not to look at her bright blue eyes. There was something mysterious about her eyes. Both of my parents had brown eyes and she had blue. I was stuck with dull brown eyes and red hair just like my mother while my sister had blue eyes and brown hair like our father.
"Oh," that's all she said.
Her eyes had bags around them. 'She must be tired. It was 2 when we received the called that our mother got into a car accident and to come right down.'
Good thing I'm 16 and have a driver's license or we would never get down there.
"Would you like a bagel or cereal perhaps?" the nurse asked.
I forgot she was still with us. She is kind of getting on my nerves.
"Um, I'll just get some toast and orange juice, Thank-you."
I walked up to the buffet and picked up the tongs and selected a plain piece of bread and then I put the bread into the toaster. While I waited I saw the nurse talk to some doctor. Their faces were serious and as soon as he left the nurse looked nervous and yet sad. My toast popped up and I got my orange juice and sat down on the bench.
"What happened?"
My sister was still slurping her cereal, but yet looking at us with her big round eyes.
"Girls, your mother caught the disease…"
I dropped my juice on my lap and froze.
