A/N: Thoughts on what happens when a bird breaks. I picture Dick, but no name is mentioned and there is nothing identifying a particular person. You may see whomever you wish to see.

This is the child of my mind and the song "Falling" by Florence + the Machine, although Florence's song is much more peaceful and happier than this is.

You used to dream of flying.

You would leap into the air and the sky would reach down and hold you in her embrace. The earth would bow down as you ruled the air, conquering the wind and overpowering even gravity. You soared with the birds—your brothers, welcoming you home, filling the air with their sweet songs. You would smile and laugh as the breeze mussed your hair, your eyes as wide and as blue as the sky surrounding you. Your home was in the clouds, with the sun and moon to protect you and the stars the only company you needed. You were more powerful than any king and mightier than any god and you were completely free, completely in control.

You don't dream of flying anymore.

Now you dream of falling. You drop into the air and the sky holds back, hands wringing as she watches you go. The earth stands tall and proud, greeting her foolish son as the wind and gravity conquer and overpower you. The birds, your false friends, cackle into the empty air as you plummet past them. You grimace and scream as the tempests tear at your hair, your eyes as wild and as dark as the emptiness surrounding you. You have no home—the clouds are a fog you wreck through; there is no support for you there. The sun and moon leave you to crash, the stars leave you abandoned. You are more worthless than any mortal and less than any man and you are completely free, completely out of control.
