Maggie was busy complaining to me about the state of the kitchen and I couldn't help but smile. Not at the way she was getting worked up about the "knives that were as old as her gran" but at the handsome suit claded man who was standing a couple of feet behind her.
I could hear his scottish accent across the playground as he told the kids to quieten down. His was in a crisp white shirt that sculpted his body and showed off his muscular frame.
I sneakily crossed the playground behind him trying not to be noticed by him and I thought it had worked, until he had a sneak look behind him and smiled at me. I quickly smiled back and he turned away from me and started to give the kids directions.
"Get to your first classes" I heard him say and that's when I joined the year 12 and 13s who were going to be helping me with the fire drills instead of going to first lessons. They looked sad but I could tell inside they were secretly going to enjoy it.
I followed them all into the hall and gave them all a worksheet and asked them a few questions. After a few inappropriate answers and a few right ones I let them go to their next class. Except when I looked back at Josh I could tell something wasn't right and I made a mental note to speak Tom later.
Later came and it was now lunchtime. I promised to sit and eat with Tom in the cafeteria, I was tucking into a homemade salad while he was munching away at what ever Maggie had cooked up in the kitchen that day. I thought that now would be a good time to ask about Josh.
"How did Josh seem to you earlier?"
"Why?"
I shook my head and replied
"No reason."
"No go on, say it" Tom said quite forcefully as he sat back in his chair.
"He seemed a bit out of it, I just...I wondered if perhaps he had not managed to kick it."
"I appreciate you trying to help but he's my son and he's fine, he's learnt his lesson and he just needs to be left alone, alright."
I knew I wasn't going to get anything out of Tom soon so I finished the rest of my lunch in silence.
The next time the fire alarm rang I followed my class out to the assembly points. It was just a drill so there was no real reason for anyone to be in any danger but when I got out there I came across Tom running back into the school, I wondered what was going on so I followed him in. He explained and we went to look for Josh.
After looking in every classroom we eventually found him in the 6th year common room with a grazed wrist. Being the trained medic I am, I got the first aid kit and we all went to the pupil support office.
Just as I had finished treating him and was taking the "sexy" rubber gloves off when Michael strode through the door and asked how it happened. I made up a sort of a lie but who was he to know if it was true or not. Michael after taking in the information said to me that he was proud of me. I tried to hide the smile that made it's way across my face but I couldn't and I think he might have noticed this. He then said to Josh to take it easy and slid off out the door and back to his work.
Tom thanked me and I asked him if he had a second, I still wasn't sure that Josh was alright. We slipped out the office and into the corridor where we could talk more freely.
"You need to get him to a GP as soon as possible." I warned Tom
"He's just a bit wobbily."
"Do you not think he needs to talk to someone?" I asked. "Think about what he's done, OK, It's not normal behaviour...Just take him to a GP and see what they say."
"Why don't you just stick to basic first aid and leave the psychology to people who know what they're talking about."
I turned around and left I couldn't believe Tom couldn't see what was wrong.
As my last class went, I picked up the marking I had to do that night and my jacket and made my way to my car to spend another night in a empty house.
