A/N- This is my first, slightly out of character, Harry Potter fic. Its pretty short, but I hope you enjoy it otherwise!
Moonlight on the Water
A young woman sat by the edge of the lake, perched on a flat rock that reached out over the water. The rock was still warm from the sun. The girl was silent, her legs swaying gently back and forth, brushing the water with her toes.
It was a beautiful night. The stars twinkled brightly and the moon was a thin crescent, its silver light reflecting off the water onto the woman's face. Her fair complexion and brown hair seemed to glow in the moonlight. A warm zephyr breathed life into the trees, making the newly budded leaves whisper and sing.
Hermione found it almost impossible that such a peaceful place could exist in such a troubled world.
Hermione Granger's sixth year at Hogwarts had turned out to be a difficult one. Hermione had been made prefect for a second term now. A prefect had many more responsibilities than a normal sixth year student. On top of that, there was Harry and ehr parents to worry over. Both were in danger. Both were targets of the Dark Lord and his Death Eaters. Many Slytherins had been exceptionally cruel to those whose parents' were muggles. Hermione found Pansy Parkinson and Draco Malfoy's insults and teasing almost unbearable. There was also studying. Ron and her had been bickering more than ever lately, but mostly to keep their minds off what was really going on.
During her last days at HOgwarts before summer holiday, Hermione had begun to find solace perched on the rock at night. The peacefulness of it all relieved the stress that had been building over the months, the worry, the pain. No one questioned her abscense.
Hermione suddenly snapped back to the present when she sensed the presence of another person. Ron.
"Mind if I join you?" He asked. "I've been wondering where you were dissapearing to. I got worried when Madam Pince said you hadn't been in the library for at least 2 hours."
Hermione was grateful that he hadn't tried to start a fight. She moved over, gesturing to the empty space beside her. She chose to ignore his last remark.
The two sat together in silence, enjoying each other's company. They didn't need words. Ron looked into the eyes of his best friend. Her large amber eyes were clouded and there were dark rings under them. His brow wrinkled in concern.
"Hermione, it'll be alright. Don't be afraid to cry." He whispered, not sounding at all like the stubborn red head she knew.
A signle tear fell from her eye. Ron bent his head and kissed her cheek softly. Hermione movied into the space between them until her head was resting on his shoulder, where she wept silently and shamelessly. She let the tears wash over her tired face.
The two stayed like that for a long while. Speaking not a word.
"I wish there was a way for us to stay in this moment forever." Hermione whispered. And with that, she drifted into a peaceful slumber.
