For Hannah(TheLestrangeMistress)

Happy belated birthday!

"You were born a Malfoy, Draco, but you are also a Black," Narcissa murmured as she hugged the sleeping bundle tightly in the early morning hours.

"Both those names mean so much more than a name on a pureblood register. You are so much more than all those other children of pureblood descent.

The only answer she got was a tiny drowsily shaken fist, which she smiled at benignly before smoothing the blankets back with a bejeweled hand.

Her little dragon will grow up to be powerful, and not just in the way his father is under the Dark Lord.

Pride must be swallowed, but little dragons will grow up into big dragons...

Pride

Sitting in the back of the courthouse of the Council of Magical Law, Narcissa Malfoy looks ever the pureblood queen. Century old heirlooms drip from her wrists and throat, along with the haughty stance, cause her to seem nothing like a woman who is on her way to lose everything. Only the tiniest shadow in her glance accompany the sound of Bellatrix's crimes read out to the wizarding assembly.

A normal woman would have screamed and pleaded for mercy on behalf of her own sister, but not she.

With a ramrod straight back and elegantly folded hands, Narcissa drinks in the verdict and the final (false) confession of Bellatrix who admits to Imperiusing Lucius Malfoy, which as planned, is the final tool Cissy needs to free her family from all blame.

Of course, Narcissa prays for her sister, sheds silent tears inside of her, but the mother inside, that has grown and blossomed, knows, that with this, Draco will know a mother and a father, which is enough.

After all, pure-blooded girls always knew what was really important.

For a while, she will swallow her pride until the Malfoy family can once again ascend to greatness.

In that world, Draco will be safe and her sisters will be free.

But for now, Narcissa is elegant, pretty, and selfish.

She will hold her head up and cast away her pride.

It is all for the greater good.

Innocence once lost, can never be regained. Darkness, once gazed upon, can never be lost.

The manor is dark, so unlike the setting for past birthdays and celebrations.

Once, Narcissa had been a reigning queen, wife to an influential Death Eater, sister to the Dark Lord's first in command.

But now, she is the wife a disgraced man, and the sister of a shell of a woman.

The once lavish manor had been used as a headquarters for filthy half bloods and trash, with she, the mistress ousted from her own rooms.

The Dark Lord had took everything from her: home, husband, and so much more.

He is not going to take her son.

Narcissa will make sure of it.

Draco says it's for the greater good of the family.

"They have something of mine that I want back," he argues as he searches for a wand in ransacked drawers.

She knows it is more than a debt.

Like herself, her son wants to fight for a world where the Malfoys will be back on their pedestal.

He swallows his pride to fight for a half blood Dark Lord, while she gives up her wand.

After all, it is for the greater good.
