Last Chance

Perspective- Darkness the Hedgehog

I groaned while glaring at the calendar. It read February fourteenth. The expected special day, and yet I had only been snoozing and waiting for morning to pass. Sadly, morning seemed everlasting. Yawning, I picked myself up, dressed up (which I rarely do), and left my shelter, going to meet Iceberg for our last day together.

When I had arrived at his house, he glanced at me, dazed.

"Hi…"

I approached him and rubbed his head, "What's wrong?"

"I don't want you to go…" a tear slipped from his eye.

"I don't want to either…but it's not my choice…it's the Dark Legion's choice. They apparently want me to join them. If not, they'll find me and kill me…"

"Can I come?"

I stared at the floor, heartbroken, "They told me to come alone tomorrow. I'm sorry."

"Don't apologize," Iceberg grabbed my hand, "It's not your fault that they're so selfish!"

I nodded in agreement. It wasn't my fault.

"Are you ready?" Iceberg gestured to my silver dress in amazement.

"Yeah."

He released my hand and swung his arm around me.

"What are you doing?" I gasped, puzzled.

"Comforting you…"

"Oh…" I blushed, "Thank you…"

He smiled, "No problem…anyway, I need to get used to be this close to you. I promised I'd dance with you tonight at the dance. Plus I have to practice with you, so…um…"

"It doesn't matter, Iceberg…" I blushed bright cherry, "I'm just happy you're at lest saying goodbye to me…"

Iceberg hushed me, placing a finger on his lips, "Please don't talk about that. I'm not saying goodbye to you because I'm not letting you leave, you got that?"

Since when did he decide that he's determined to keep me here? I thought he was more determined to stay with me wherever I go? I thought in confusion.

Without hesitation, Iceberg led me through a verdant forest and to an area where the lake sat, reflecting the bright sunlight at the moment. He grabbed my hands and swayed with me. At first, my clumsiness almost made us fall straight into the lake until my grip on Iceberg's chest grew tighter and my movements grew firmer. When the dance arrived, both of us were ready to display our bond in our movements. As the night grew older and the day ended, all I could do was sob. Iceberg sat beside me through all the pain, though, commenting on my good qualities.

I swallowed hard. Now it was time for me to leave. I tried to leave, but Iceberg wouldn't let me leave his grip.

"No. You're not going."

"Iceberg! ARE YOU CRAZY? They will kill me if I don't go!"

He pulled me in closer. I could resist but hug him and try to forget what fate had given me.

"Darkness…listen…I'll destroy the entire Dark Legion before you leave me!"

"WHY? I thought you didn't like me!"

"I didn't!" his voice grew deeper as he grew warmer from sweat, "But now I do!"

I stopped. What was Iceberg saying? Was he lying? As I stared into his bright, hazel eyes, I knew he was telling the truth.

"What do you mean?" "I…I've found you're a better person than I thought…I saw how amazing you were when I danced with you…I thought you were…" tears stung his face as he could barely talk.

"Iceberg!" I raised my voice, "I'm not leaving!"

"What?" stunned, he wiped his eyes.

"We can destroy the Dark Legion instead of leaving each other! I can't bear to see you cry!"

"You mean it?"

"Yes!"

Hours later the Dark Legion arrived, asking for my alliance. Refusing, they attack me. Seeing no way to avoid the attack, Iceberg blocked it. Blood oozed from his wound as chances for life were disappearing.

"Please save yourself…Darkness…" he plead.

The Dark Legion tackled me.

"No…I won't!" I hissed to Iceberg, "I'm going to die beside you!"

Motionless, Iceberg screamed as a spear was pushed through my chest.

"I'll see you in heaven…Iceberg…" I uttered with my last breath.
