Jacob

Have ya ever tried doing something for your friends that got ya in trouble? That is exactly how
I got stuck with this report. What my teacher assigned me to do was to interview a homeless person.
"Man!" I said to my pal, Mia, as we walked down the sidewalk, "where am I gonna find a homeless
person that ain't scary?" We both laughed at what I had said, "How bout that guy there?" she said. I
looked at the person she was pointing to. He was about sixteen, had big, cerulean blue eyes and short,
dirty brown hair. He was wearing an old blue trench coat that was filled with holes and stained with dirt.
I walked over to him ignoring my friend. I stared into the boy's eyes with interest and he stared back. "Is
there something I could help you with?" He asked softly. I didn't realize he was talking to me because
I was thinking of how handsome he looked for a homeless person. "Huh? Oh, um, can I ask you a few
questions for a report I'm doing?" I replied nervously. The boy nodded his head. He never took his eyes
off of me as we spoke and I found out his name was Jacob. After about an hour passed, I decided I
should go home.
When I reached my front door, I immediately headed upstairs to go to my bedroom. As I lie on
my bed, I began think about that boy. I closed my eyes and was soon fast asleep. Now this is where it
gets weird, I had a strange dream. This is how it went:
I climbed out of a cardboard box into the morning sun. I could smell food that was being sold in the
park that day. I saw all types of families having fun wishing I could be with them. My stomach rumbles.
I haven't eaten for about a week now. I get on my feet and go to the nearest dumpster to search for food.
but find nothing, so I decide to wait until tomorrow. The day gets hotter and hotter as I walk back to the
park, where my box was located. I then crawled back into my box and decided as soon as everyone left,
I would take a bath in the fountain that was in the middle of the park I sighed and went back to sleep.
When I woke up the next morning I thought about the dream and noticed that I had put myself in
Jacob's shoes. I couldn't wait for school so I could tell the teacher about him and his experiences. For
now when I see homeless people on the street, I no longer think of them as scary. I think of them as
people who need a helping hand, like Jacob.
