Disclaimer: I could probably get away with leaving this out since their names aren't actually mentioned, but Hawkgirl and Green Lantern obviously aren't mine. They belong to the makers of DC Comics and I'm just borrowing them for the moment. I might keep Lantern to myself for a little while longer, though ;)

Note: This begins around "Wake the Dead."

It's been four years.

Four years since he last heard the rustle of massive wings in flight.
Four years since she distinguished ebony silhouette from the starry night.

Four years since their eyes had met,
Since they averted each other's gaze.
Four years since green meant guilt and regret,
Since a soldier's façade crumpled in pain.

Four years ago they'd been past awkward greetings and surreptitious glances.
Four years ago they said 'what the hell' and decided to take their chances.

Now she knew every scar that marred the musculature of his body,
What it was to detect mirth in a kiss from full, upturned lips.
He could still recall the downy texture of the angel's feathers,
And how well he'd once fit into the lush curve of creamy hips.

It's been four years since he began to forgive.
It's been four years since she burned the mask.
It's been four years since he whispered he still loved her.
It's been four years since she dared to ask.

It's been awhile since he held her like this,
A lifetime since they shared such a tentative kiss.
