Fakiru Week 2015-Slow

For Fakiru Week 2015, day 3 theme: Slow. Spoiler for the end. Ahiru struggles with knowing how the final act of Drosselmeyer's story will end and how life after the story will go on without her. However, in the Lake of Despair, Fakir reassures Ahiru of what she needs to do, and slowly, Ahiru comes to terms with the decision she makes.

Day 3: Slow

Slowly. I felt myself fall, falling deeper and deeper…into where? Ah, that's right, the lake. I found myself with no other options, and though I desperately wanted to fix everything, put it back to the way it was, make it right… I lacked that resolve. Because I was afraid. Is it wrong to want to stay like this, in a human form, being able to do things I had never dreamed of doing while I was a duck?

Yes, it is wrong to be so selfish while everyone else was suffering. But isn't what Drosselmeyer said was going to happen happening? A tragedy in a tale that is our lives…

My feet touch the ground, and I collapse. Everything around me is moving in slow motion, hinging on this indecision of mine. I tug on the necklace around my neck. Not just a necklace, the pendant is the last shard of the Prince's heart. I know this, I need to give it back to him! So that he can defeat the Raven, so that he can save Rue and the townspeople. So that this story can end. So that everything will go back to normal. So that there won't be any more animal people. So that….so that… slowly… they would forget about me.….How long have I been here? Am I waiting for something to happen, someone to come and rescue me? I don't even seem to be drowning, breathing water instead of air, or is that normal for a duck?

Bubbles rush and looking up, I can see a figure swimming down to me, reaching, reaching. And slowly, strong arms reach to embrace me and the look in his eyes tell me that everything will be all right. Fakir nods, gently guiding me through a step, a twirl, all slowed by the watery environment; he conveys everything in the look in his eyes, so slowly, I come to realize what I must do. And by finally grasping the necklace and feeling the chain give, I know that the end is near and that, slowly, this story will come to an end.
