He'd been nursing a glass of amber liquor when she placed herself next to him.
"I'm sorry, I screwed up."
The mission was supposed to be simple, search through an abandoned Centipede base, retrieve any data found. They hadn't expected to be ambushed by Centipede soldiers.
"It wasn't your fault rookie," Ward murmured, taking another swig of scotch.
But it was Skye thought to herself. She had been doing her best to fight off the enemy, grabbing the night-night gun to take aim but he'd managed to knock it out of her hands, forcing Ward to interfere. Skye didn't know what she felt worse about, forcing Ward to come help her or having to be helped in the first place.
He'd taken a few heavy hits before managing to incapacitate the soldier. Skye had managed to hold her own for the rest of the mission, but it didn't stop her from feeling guilty when she spotted Ward holding an ice pack to his ribs hours later.
"I'm your SO, and you're a new agent," he said a few moments later, "it's my job, these things are expected to happen when you're new in the field. It's my fault for leaving you, I don't think anyone could take on those bastards on their own." Ward slammed his glass on the table causing Skye to flinch.
"Grant, hey listen, it's not your fault. I ran off, I though I could handle it and you're the one who wound up getting hurt. I know you'd do anything to protect us, all of us." Ward turned to look over at her,
"But you can't save all of us, all the time. You can't beat yourself up when one of us ends up needing help. Like you said it's the field, you can't predict anything especially when you're new." Skye softly placed her hand on his arm, he tensed for a moment before letting his muscles relax.
"You learn fast rookie. That was actually pretty smart." Skye gave him a soft smile,
"Well I learned from the best."
