The Way You Smile

Allen-centric poem, from the perspective of those closest to him.

The way you smile,

that brave, strong smile,

I can't stand to see it...

We all watched him as he fought for us, as he fought for humanity, for the imprisoned souls of the Akuma. He was always smiling that unbreakable smile. That smile that masked his fear, his anger, his pained expressions. He bore the weight of the world through that smile, though you would never know it by just looking once at that horrid smile.

because I know that inside,

inside you are breaking.

I can't stand it,

the way you smile,

it breaks my heart...

Allen Walker was the strongest of all the weapons known as exorcists, strongest at heart, mostly. We all envied that strength, as it allowed him to go to battle and cry out for the ones lost under his blows, and cry out for the ones that he was saving.

because even though

you say you are here

with us, and will stay forever...

We all stood together, holding each other up, a complex, and yet painfully simple support system that we hoped would never break, but knowing, each and every one of us, deep in our hearts, that it could be broken all too easily, at any given time.

the way you smile,

tells me that who you were,

who you are,

is breaking,

with every breath...

As he hurled himself into his final battle, we watched in horror, in sorrow. He had always fought for the ones he loved. Nothing could be done as the sacrifice was made.

and if you keep that smile

you will never be the same

He changed so much, before our astonished eyes, and each time he left us, he came back different, but still...That smile is always the same. His mask never disappeared, never changed, never revealed a thing.

Stop smiling

the way you smile

because it breaks my heart.

He bore the weight of the world on his shoulders, but it was that smile that crushed him.
