UPDATE 20 Dec 2006: Reposted due to the fact that the first paragraph was repeated. I don't know how that happened, but shame on me for posting while tired and not double checking. Thanks to avaleighfizgerald for pointing it out. Sorry again.
Doctor Zack Addy looked out over the empty labs of the Jeffersonian Institute. The young man gave a sigh. Doctor, he thought. I did it. He let his eyes scan over what lay below him and they landed on the center platform that he and Doctor Brennan had worked on as teacher and student. But no more. Now they were colleagues. Equals. Will, not exactly. Dr. Brennan is still head anthropologist. Zack smiled at the thought that he was an equal to the other members of the team. I might be the youngest, the newest, but I'm an equal. He felt his heart sink at the thought. Equal. He would be responsible for his findings, his work, and his mistakes. He would have to sign his name to paperwork, and appear in court. Zack swallowed down the fear as Angela's voice returned to him. "You'll do fine," she had said. "I have faith in you." Faith. A word that Dr. Brennan didn't use, didn't believe in, but he did. At least, he thought he did. Zack smiled as he remembered the hug Brennan had given him. Now that was unexpected, he thought. She's really happy for me. She showed me.
Zack moved his eyes over to where Doctor Jack Hodgins spent most of his days. My best friend. Zack knew that he wouldn't be where he was without Hodgins. He's always believed in me. Although maybe in a weird sort of way. Zack nodded at his on thoughts. Hodgins had always backed him up, and the young doctor knew he owed Hodgins more than he would ever be able to repay.
Next, his eyes moved toward Angela's office. Just like a sister. If it hadn't been for Angela, Zack knew he would never have gotten the job. That he would have been sent somewhere out of the way, out of the public eye, to wither away to nothing. I didn't become a doctor to have that happen. Zack drew in a deep breath. He was he equal as well. He was a full-fledged member of the team, with only Cam above him. Zack shook his head, he would rather not think about her.
That only left Agent Seeley Booth. I don't understand him, Zack thought. I guess because he's so much different from the rest of the people I know. But he did put an open hand on my shoulder. Zack's smile widen at the thought. Booth was proud of him, and that above all else made him happy. Equal. Well, maybe not to Booth, but I am equal to everybody else. Zack stood straight, his shoulders back and his head high. He had a feeling that along with his new title would could new respect and with that, would come a new personality. After all, he was no longer Zack Addy, personal assistant to Doctor Brennan. Now he was Doctor Zachary Uriah Addy. Equal.
There...a much needed Zack fic.
