Prologue - Fate's First Move
It was the choice that changed my life.
My entire life that is now stretched out in front of me, like a highway, never ending. I'm with the one I love...
But it never started like that.
It was my mom's choice to send me off to Montreal in Quebec, Canada. Her new husband, Phil, played as a baseball player, and he was moving all over the place. Mom stayed home with me in Phoenix while he traveled, but I knew it made her sad not being with him. So, I asked if I could move somewhere else. Mom wanted me to live with my Grandma in Canada. I never asked why, because I thought it would be perfectly fine to live with my dad. But, mom knows what's best for me.
So, when mom kissed me goodbye at the airport - Phil giving an awkward hug - I knew that it was time to grow up and get going. To say I was frightened of being without my mom was kinda an understatement.
Grandma was an old woman, near the age of at least 80, with a puff of white hair around her wrinkly kind face. When I arrived at her house by taxi - as she has no license - she had some cookies on a plate, still steaming hot and fresh from the oven. I felt like I was a kid again.
She had already signed me up for high school. And had brought me a car to get my ass there. Everything was all set, and no matter how much I tried to force myself to be gloomy - I was excited. Canada is a different place from Phoenix. It's colder here, and more snow. I hate the cold. And the rain.
The first day of school was... well, to sum it up, it was like I was a ghost. Invisible. No one talked to me, or even sat with me at lunch. The teachers didn't ask me to introduce myself, and I sit at desks alone. So, it's like my dream come true.
But then she came, and turned my life upside down.
She made me who I am today.
And, well, she was my first friend, no matter what.
Her name was...
Victoria.
