A/N: This story is set in a kind of parallel universe where Caroline was the one who became ill and Cave had to watch her die. Enjoy!

Cave stared at the picture of his wife. She looked so beautiful back then, with her long shiny brown her and her flawless complexion. To Cave, Caroline surely was his princess, no, his queen.

"Mr Johnson? C-Caroline wants to see you, sir" He glanced up to see a young man standing in the door way, he was Doug Rattmann, a scientist. Whenever someone entered Cave's office they had to knock, or prepare to have their head ripped from their neck, but all he did was nod and politely left the room.

As he entered a cold, white room, he was immediately drawn to Caroline. She was just a shadow of her former self. Most her hair had fallen out, you could see her bones and blood vessels through her skin and her eyes were bloodshot, with her irises cloudy as her moon rock poisoning had caused her to go blind. Cave walked up to her bedside and held her hand.

"The GLaDOS project is hours away from being ready for a human conscience, just hold on, Caroline!" Caroline let a small laugh, which since she became ill always was heard as a wheeze.

"S-sir, you must *cough* understand that I don't want this...please *cough* you take my place in it if you want it" She had very rarely seen her husband cry, the only time she recalled was when she gave birth to their daughter, Chell, but if she could see him know, she would see the waterfall of tears streaming down his face. He didn't want her to die, he really didn't.

He stayed in the room for an hour, before he signalled a nurse to give Caroline an injection after she was hooked onto a different machine. Caroline began to convulse violently, as electricity surged through her. The new machine showed a percentage bar that slowly increased.

Cave ran from the room, headed towards his office.

APERTURESCIENCE

Doug stared at a small crack in the otherwise faultlessly painted wall when he heard his boss pass by at a pace. Concerned, he ran after him.

When Doug finally ran into his employers' office he was met at the sight of Cave holding a gun to his head.

"I forced her! I forced her into that damned piece of scrap!"

"Who sir? Wait! Don't-" –BANG-

Doug watched in horror as Cave blew his brains out.

He quickly glanced around the room in desperation for anything that would get medics here faster, until he saw Cave's family photo.

Cave, Caroline and Chell.

Wait, what about Chell? Rattmann thought

He knew what he had to do...
