Organs

He sank his teeth into another apple. His third one that day. Oh, it wasn't the last one, not for a long shot. In fact…

As he swallowed down the core, his hand extended for the next. Before the previous could even make it down his throat, he had the next to his lips.

Ahh… the juiciness… so delicious!

He wondered what would happen when he returned to the Shinigami realm… how would he stand being without apples? Well, he would have to learn – it's not as though he could just bring an apple tree up with him (could he? No…).

Besides, in the Shinigami realm, he would adapt to the environment and eventually the addiction would fade.

Why did he have such an addiction, anyways?

Not that he was complaining, he loved his apples, but still… the constant need and withdrawal symptoms weren't exactly favorable.

Dammit… it had started with a simple gesture – grab an apple, eat the apple. He hadn't even had a reason for it, he just did it.

And now look; here he was, gorging himself on these simple fruits.

But what was the reason?

It must have been his anatomy – Shinigamis didn't need food to last, after all. Their organs had dissolved into nothing. That was probably what happened when he swallowed the apples – they became nothing. Maybe if they actually provided sustenance he would last on one or two a day.

Probably….

Now Light, on the other hand… he had addictions, too. Humans had their own addictions, mostly with drugs, he observed. He wondered if they were for the same reasons – if their addictions were actually giving them something constructive, maybe they wouldn't be so addicted.

Light needed to write in this Death Note, become Kira, for his ego, in Ryuk's opinion. As a human, he doesn't need to kill anyone like a Shinigami does. He just wanted it to the point where he believed he needed it. But it's not going to do anything for him.

He will die, all the same.

So will be the opposite for Ryuk. With or without apples, he will live on. And on. And on…

He took another bite.

It would be hard to quick cold turkey, however. It'd be easier to wean off them… if only his stomach would cooperate… or, be there, more like it…

He needed to take his mind off this. He started thinking about Light again, and what they had talked about the other week. That was when Ryuk brought up the deal for the Shinigami eyes. Light's rejection was surprising, but overall, Ryuk supposed he couldn't have been expecting much else.

The deal would've shortened Light's lifespan, he was much too proud to do something like that.

However…

The deal was created by Shinigamis… trading their eyes… could they trade other organs…?

Did Light really need his stomach, after all? He was a good actor, he could fake a meal or two so his family wouldn't suspect. It's not like it would shorten his life; in fact, it might make things more appealing. He'd never have to eat again. Don't these humans ever get tired of getting hungry three times a day? Even he would have to see the benefits to this deal…

So, he could have Ryuk's stomach, and Ryuk would have Light's. Then maybe he could finally eat an apple and one would be enough for the day.

Yeah, he should try mentioning this…

He took another bite.
