Donny laughed. Even though he Barry was his best friend, he could sometimes be a little foolish. Either way, Barry was probably home by now, and Donny just sat there wondering what to do. His mother had the TV on, and it mentioned something about a red Gyarados being found in a lake. Clearly Barry had seen this too, as he burst through the door pleading with Donny to go to the nearby lake, Lake Verity, to look for a rare Pokemon like the Gyarados. Finally giving in, Donny went along, not really expecting anything special to happen, as he's been to the same lake every weekend for the past ten years. His mother told him to stay out of the tall grass, but she's been preaching that for years, and nothing had ever happened to Donny or Barry when they were in the tall grass. As they ran to the lake, an elderly man and a young girl walked past them, not thinking anything of it, they continued on, not foreseeing what events would unfold.

When they arrived at the lake, Barry spotted a briefcase in the tall grass close by. The two boys walked over to it to see what was inside. Inside were three Pokeballs! As they were leaving, they were attacked by two Starly!

"Donny, grab two of the Pokeballs! We need to protect ourselves!"

Donny grabbed two of the balls and tossed one to Barry. They both called out the Pokemon inside.

"Aw sweet, a Chimchar!" Barry quickly dispatched the Starly.

"Hmm, a Turtwig, uh, I guess you could use Tackle if you want." The Turtwig leapt forward and took out the Starly in a single attack. "Good job, thank you!"

As the bird Pokemon flew away, the man and young girl came back.

"Have either of you two young men seen my briefca- Is that it in your hands?"

"Oh, we're so sorry! We saw it in the grass and went to grab it to see if someone had lost it when we were attacked. We grabbed two Pokeballs to protect ourselves. You can have them back now." Donny offered the ball to the man, but the man wouldn't accept it.

"They're yours! I'm Professor Rowan of the Sandgem Institute, nice to meet you. I've had these Pokemon for years, and they've never had much time out and about. Take them, I'm sure they'd like that. Oh, and I never did ask for your names."

"I'm Donny, and this is Barry. It's really great to meet you, professor. But you can keep them, I mean, they aren't really ours..."

"Donny, hush, if the man wants us to keep them, then why should we refuse? Thanks a lot! Chimchar and I are gonna go train to take down the Elite Four and become the champion! I'll see you all later!"

"Well I guess I should head back to the lab now. Dawn, let's go." Rowan hurried off into the sunset to return to his lab before nightfall.

"Goodbye Donny, it was nice to meet you," Dawn said as she followed after the professor.
