She didn't know what had happened before she started working for the Earth King. It was all a blur, at the back of her memory, and she couldn't figure it out. It was like a black patch at the back of her brain. All she knew of was that her name was Joo Dee, that she was a tour guide, and that she lived in Ba Sing Se, and that was it really. But she was certain that there was something she was missing.
It was probably nothing, but when she went to sleep every night she always had a dream about it. It was too fuzzy to remember but she always recalled having one. And then she would wake up sweating heavily and panting, because the dreams always turned into nightmares, and she wasn't exactly sure why.
In the morning she would follow the same routine as she did everyday; guiding people around Ba Sing Se. It was a thankless job, really. But she did it anyway, as she kind of enjoyed meeting new faces.
However, there was one face she was never tired of seeing. There was something fascinating in his face that made her wonder. She felt like she'd already known him before becoming a tour guide... it was... strange.
His face was always reassuring and seemed to make her forget about her nightmares and strange dreams. But then, the next day, it would all start again. The dreams, followed by nightmares, followed by waking up absolutely covered in sweat and breathing deeply. Perhaps she had some sort of insomnia, but she wasn't going to be sure of it.
And as the years passed in Ba Sing Se she just grinned and bore it, like she always did, and when it came to guide the Avatar around, and she failed in keeping the peace of Ba Sing Se, she was whisked off to Lake Laogi. But she didn't really mind, because it meant she would forget about everything for a while and feel refreshed when she came back.
Yes it was a thankless job, but someone had to do it.
