"I looked into this...and I just don't have the money, Aunt Becky."
"Oh Steph." Becky replied. "Jesse and I will help however we can."
"Thanks...but we're talking tens of thousands of dollars." Stephanie said, wiping a tear. "And no guarantees."
"Have you and Jimmy talked about it at all? Maybe you could get loans, or work some extra shifts to make extra money."
"I mean I haven't really talked to Jimmy. It would be a lot to ask him to do this for me. I would love to be a mom, but...I just don't think it's in the cards for me."
"Well, if you decide you want to try, as I said, I promise Jesse and I will help however we can."
"Thanks."
Suddenly as Becky left, Stephanie's phone rang. It was her baby sister.
"Hey Michelle."
"Stephanie, how did your appointment go?"
Stephanie smiled. She was always in contact with her baby sister via phone, or skype. She would text her often and they would swap stories of how their day went.
"I can't get pregnant." Stephanie replied.
"I'm sorry Steph."
"I could have a baby using a surrogate...but..."
"...but what?"
"It's just not going to happen." Stephanie replied.
Michelle could feel her voice slipping into tears. "Why not?"
"It costs too much money." Stephanie cried. "By the time I can even try to save the thousands of dollars that it would cost...it'll be too late. The doctor said that if I'm going to do this, I need to do it soon."
"Jimmy doesn't have the money?"
Steph giggled between tears, "You haven't met him yet, have you?"
"No."
"He's sweet...but...he's not exactly rich. He takes photographs for money."
"Really money is holding you back?"
Stephanie sighed. "Yeah, unless I win the lottery tonight. Maybe I'll get lucky. Maybe if I wish on stars or throw pennies in a fountain..."
"It means a lot to you, huh?"
"I don't want to talk about it anymore." Steph replied. "Hey how's it going with your fashion line?"
"It's going okay. We're selling clothes...that's what every fashion designer dreams of doing, right?"
"Really busy?"
"Yeah, we're making money." Michelle replied, coyly.
"I love you."
"I love you too."
3 days later...
"Aunt Stephanie Aunt Stephanie!" Max yelled from the living room.
"Yeah, Max?"
"Aunt Michelle sent you a letter!" Max replied, excited to hand her the envelope.
"I just talked to her the other day." Steph replied. "Looks like a letter."
Stephanie opened the large envelope and pulled out the letter.
When DJ lost her husband, I sent her one, too. Things are going really well for me financially, and if that's the only thing keeping you from your dream, then I want your dream to come true for you.
Love you,
Michelle
Stephanie looked inside the envelope to find a check. Her heart stopped when she saw the amount. She broke down when she saw the amount.
"Steph? Are you okay?" DJ asked.
"Michelle just basically paid for my baby."
