Hey guys. I wasn't planning on writing this, but the idea just kind of came out of nowhere. Well, actually no—this story's based off You're Not Alone by Big Time Rush and Save You Tonight by One Direction. Both songs revolve around the same concept, so I figured I'd write something based on them. Hope you guys like it. It could be seen as slash, but it's not... not really. Anyway, enjoy. :)
It was past midnight when James got the call. He was just drifting off to sleep, when we heard his phone vibrating from where it rested on his nightstand. Curiosity got the best of him. After all, who would be calling him at that hour? It was with dread crawling up his spine, that he picked up the vibrating device, only to realize it was Kendall that was calling him. He took no time in answering the call.
"Hello?"
J-James? The blond's voice sounded shaky, scared, broken. James couldn't help the way his heart seemed to drop at the sound of it—it sounded nothing like the bravado Kendall put up on a daily basis. C-Can you pick me up, James? That's when he remembered, his younger friend had had a date with a girl from school that very night. The two were supposed to go to the movies. James couldn't help but wonder if it had anything to do with that.
"Yeah, sure. Where are you at?" he asked, just in case he was wrong, though he had a feeling that he wasn't. Kendall's next words confirmed his suspicion.
I'm at the theatre... Please hurry. As Kendall said this, James worked on putting his sneakers on and grabbing his jacket and keys. He rushed out of his house and into the cold Minnesota air, phone still held tightly in his grasp, close to his ear. It was quite chilly outside, despite it only being the beginning of fall. Minnesota was known for its chilly climate, so it was no surprise to him.
"I'm coming, okay? Stay inside, though, it's pretty cold," he instructed the blond. "I'll be there soon." It was times like these when he really wished that he could drive, just so that he could save some time. But, of course, seeing as he was just fourteen, driving at his age would have been considered against the law. He had to settle for practically running all the way to the theatre, which was kind of hard to do, considering how easily he ran out of breath due to the cold. All the way there, he made no move to hang up the phone. It wasn't until he was outside the theatre, that he hung up the phone, right after letting Kendall know that he had arrived.
James watched with concern as the doors to the movie theatre swung open, and out came a lanky figure, head down, blond bangs covering what James could guarantee were sad green eyes. The smaller boy only raised his head for a moment, taking in his surroundings. His eyes seemed to light up at the sight of James, but the spark in them was gone as soon as it had come. Kendall rushed to James' side, throwing his arms around the taller boy's shoulders without warning, almost knocking both of them to the ground. He buried his face against the crook of the brunette's neck. Not really knowing what to do, James brought his arms to wrap around the boy's waist, pulling him closer. He tangled his fingers in between dirty blond locks, attempting to comfort the distraught boy in any way.
"Do you wanna talk about it?" he whispered in Kendall's ear. He felt the younger boy shake his head against his skin.
"Not here," Kendall responded in a croaky voice as he pulled away from the hug. "C-Can I go over to your house? I don't want to be by myself... Please?" The look he was giving James was absolutely heartbreaking, especially to someone like James, who knew that the boy was usually not like this. Kendall always acted so strong, and while he was strong, James knew that there were times when even he needed some comfort. It didn't necessarily mean that he was weak, but to Kendall, letting his guard down equalled to being weak.
"Yeah, of course. Come on." He took a hold of Kendall's hand, realizing just how vigorously the shorter boy was shaking. Taking a moment to turn to look at him, he realized that unlike him, Kendall wore no jacket to keep him warm from the cold. It was with no hesitation that James slipped his jacket off of his body and helped Kendall into it, despite the blond's protests to keep it on.
"James, you're going to get sick," he said, staring down at the jacket, which was too big on his smaller frame. The sleeves reached past his fingertips, the whole thing fitting loosely on him, rather than snug like it did on James. The older boy made no indication of taking it back. Instead, he zipped it up and pulled the hood over Kendall's head. The green eyed boy pouted, crossing his arms over his chest. James had to hold back the smile that wanted oh so desperately to appear on his face, at how small Kendall looked. The size between the two wasn't that much of a difference, but the jacket's size made him look even smaller.
"I'll be fine, don't worry. You need it more than I do."
"But James—"
"Kendall." James gave him a warning look. "Keep it on, alright? Don't worry." He wrapped an arm around Kendall's shoulders and leaned towards him, briefly pressing his lips to Kendall's mop of dirty blond hair. The shorter boy sighed, realizing he wasn't going to change James' mind, and leaned against James' touch, longing for some kind of physical contact.
"Thanks, Jay," he said as they walked, turning to James with a small smile on his face. The brunette smiled back.
"What are friends for?" he said. Aside from that, the walk was silent. It took them about fifteen minutes to make it back to James' house, but when they got there, they were greeted by warmth. James took Kendall's hand and led him towards his living room. The two sat down on the couch, James leaning against the cushions, while Kendall curled up against James' side and rested his head on the older boy's shoulder, which he didn't seem to mind in the slightest.
"What happened?" James asked once seconds had ticked by. Kendall sighed, his gaze falling to his lap. James had a feeling that whatever had happened wasn't going to be good, if Kendall's silence and saddened behavior was anything to go by.
"I was supposed to pick her up, but I was running a little late, so she told me she'd go on ahead without me… But when I got to the theatre, she was... s-she was k-kissing some other guy." James felt his blood boil at Kendall's words. He clenched his fists subconsciously, wanting more than anything to rip the girl's head off, though he knew that he couldn't. But the emotional state Kendall was in only upset him even more. How someone could do something like that to someone like Kendall, was beyond his understanding. Kendall was the sweetest person ever, in his opinion. The boy had a heart of gold, and would never do anything to hurt another soul on purpose.
"Kendall..."
"I feel so stupid, James, for thinking that I had a chance with her. I know I shouldn't be this upset. After all, it's not like I was dating her for a long time; it was just a stupid date. But... I just... I don't know."
"Hey, look at me," James said softly, placing his fingers under Kendall's chin, guiding his eyes to meet his own. He could see the sadness in Kendall's eyes, the heartbreak, the tears pooling in those emerald orbs. Kendall didn't deserve this, and he hated that he was going through something like this. He'd rather take Kendall's place than watch him hurt in such a way.
"I'm sorry..."
"You have nothing to be sorry for. You have every right to be upset, and you know I won't judge you for falling apart. I'm here for you, okay? You're not alone," he said, pulling the heartbroken teen into a hug and not letting him go. He held Kendall as he finally allowed the tears to spill down his cheeks. He whispered sweet nothings in his ear and simply held onto him, knowing that it was the one thing that he would have wanted, if he were to be in the blond's position.
"I feel dumb," Kendall mumbled after having calmed down a bit. "I should have known."
"That's the thing; you couldn't have known. People do stupid things like that for stupid reasons. I would have never done something like that," James whispered, blushing when he realized what he had just said. Kendall noticed the blush that had crept onto the brunette's cheeks and felt his own cheeks heating up. He ducked his head, hiding the tiny smile that had formed on his lips.
"I know," he whispered, letting his head fall against James' chest. "To be honest, I'd rather watch a movie with you than with some girl," he admitted. James couldn't help the smile that appeared on his face.
"Hey, why not?" he said, reaching for the remote that was lying just at arm's length. He turned the TV on and surfed through the channels, stopping only when the two of them agreed on watching a re-run of The Nightmare Before Christmas. The two boys fell silent, enjoying each other's company—Kendall realizing that having James by his side, was better than having some girl who stood him up before even giving him a chance. In that moment, James was all he needed.
I didn't really like the ending, but I'm not really good at writing endings that aren't angsty... Also, this story takes place during the fall (don't ask why, because I have no explanation). Like it? Hate it? Let me know. Thanks for reading. :)
