If there was anyone the Doctor felt guilty about, it was Donna Noble.
Donna Noble with her flaming hair; Donna Noble with her witty retorts; Donna Noble, wonderful and amazing, even if she didn't realize it.
Even if she never truly believed that she could be something, someone. Even if she never believed that she was, truly, someone special and of importance. Because every single one of his companions mattered in some way to the universe, large as it was.
They all were special. He cherished them all, even when they didn't understand a single word he said.
But Donna Noble, wonderful and amazing Donna Noble, realized her potential and lost it again without remember any single fantastic thing that she had seen – together.
Oh, but he knew, he knew that Doctor Donna could not be, could never be, and he was struck with the realization that he wold have to leave her behind and never, ever, would she remember him. And she was smart and brilliant, and she, too, realized that she could never travel forever with the Doctor in his odd blue box.
So he made her – wonderful, brilliant, amazing, Donna Noble, Doctor Donna – forget. And he left her behind, as she forgot about the funny man in the little blue box that took her to faraway places. And when the Doctor visited her one more time, his heart ached for his friend that he only knew for a short time knowing that, soon enough, (no matter what he wished deep, deep down), he would leave his friends behind.
But when they asked him again and again about his little blue box that never seemed to fit anywhere, he would pause.
Glance at them.
And lie.
Because his wonderful, amazing, brilliant Donna Noble had known how to fix it, so it would once more blend in with its surroundings.
Because he never, ever wanted to forget her.
So it stayed as it was. Blue and a box.
