Prologue
Remnant, this world has always been unforgiving to the ones who inhabit it. One god of light and one god of darkness, a tale as old as man themselves, have been a part of this world and its creation. They were portrayed as a respected animal among men, dragons among sheep, and their souls were in forced into diamonds and became gems of pure power. Things weren't so dier, the two gods were just that, gods. They were brothers in a sense, and worked together to make the ocean, the sky, and the land, but their greatest creation was man. Over time the two gods have grown apart and the heart of the dark god had grown in hatred. His brother had always received more praise and offerings then he did. War broke out between him and the humans, many died and the world was nearly wiped a new. The light god knew if he didn't do anything the world would parish. In a act of desperation, the light god shattered his gem and it split into five parts, creating me and my siblings. We had our own unique gems that also represented our soul and took the form of animals that held important status among men.
Me and my siblings took action against our so called uncle and shattered his gem. We took hold of each piece and hid them so no evil can rise again. Over time we had made a staple on this planet and created our own children that would walk along men as mortal beings, we had created the first faunus. Each type of faunus could be traced back to us, My brother Fyre had created the horned types like bull and deer faunus, my sister Khazir made the felines, and I made the Kaines. Our other two siblings had made types of faunus of their own, primates and rodents respectively, but my role in the creation of faunus had made an unexpected type, the first Kitsune was born.
The first Kitsune was a genuine child of mine. Not a creation of my power, but an offspring between me and a mortal man who was accustomed to the rare source of energy that was magic, like myself. My little Hana was the prime of my immortal life. While her father aged, she didn't, staying forever young alongside me. She helped us protect the shattered piece of the dark gods gem and was the bearer of multiple children herself, making the first Kitsune Clan.
But our attempts at protecting the fragments had failed and one of the five pieces had gone missing along with the death of Hana. The tragedy hit us hard, but me and her father the hardest. The news reached us from one of my many grandchildren while Hana's father was on his deathbed. I was on his side that day and I saw the sadness in his eyes as he passed on. While I thought the child this man had left me could make me see the importance of a normal life, I'm now left with nothing. For the first time in the centuries I've been around, I felt lonely and powerless.
A new threat did arrive a hundred years later in the form of the terrible creatures of grimm and their leader Salem, the reformed soul of the missing shattered piece. The creatures of grimm take many forms and shapes but they all have the same motive, kill all of human and faunus kind. In the middle of my mopping I decided it was time to do something. Me and my fellow gods gave our last gifts to the mortals that roam the land. Dust, aura, and semblance. Dust is a form of elemental energy that man has used to power their buildings with fire and electricity or give an upgrade to their weapons and many more useful uses. Aura is a protective shield powered by one's soul, it can protect fatal wounds from occurring when hit or even heal small wounds. Semblance is connected to aura and is a unique ability anyone can unlock with enough practice. Each semblance is unique to an individual and can be used in many ways.
Over time us gods and Salem have faded into myth and legend, even though we still fight in the back lines. Man has created the four huntsman academies around the world that train young warriors to fight grimm and their many forms. I have started a new clan of Kitsune, marking the 150th anniversary of my daughters death, creating a new area. Now it is 1904 and I'm visiting one of the four academies to speak to a very old friend.
The large empty halls of the huntsman academy they call Beacon lay in silent as a large fox faunus with multiple white tails walks down along with two smaller ones sticking close to her side guarding from any unknown threat. The largest of the three faunus was wearing a special type of kimono that had a variety of colours. A red top spread into large white sleeves with a gold rim to the ends as her hands stay folded within each other. A long black skirt that ended with the same gold rim ended at her lower knee almost covering the white socks made of the same silk like fabric the outfit was made with covered up to her mid knee and black wooden like shoes that clacked in the silence of the hall. Her long black hair was tied into a high end bun with a pair of fox ears on top her haid. Her cyan eyes stared in front of her in deep concentration of what lied ahead.
The other two faunus walked only a foot behind her and wore a long cape of a unique colour each with a japanese fox mask with lines over the eyes and mouth matching the colour of their cape, one of a light blue and the other violet. While you couldn't tell from just looking at them but a set of ears and tails lead behind the thick silk like capes that covered them from head to toe.
The trio of fox faunus had reach a door that opened into a large couridoor. A man in a black suit and green turtle neck stood near the end with a mug of coffee in one hand and his other on top a cane. He looked towards the now open door on the other side of the hale, his brown eyes slightly hidden behind his small black tinted glasses. "Ah, welcome miss Yuki Tetsu," the man greeted the fox," what can this old man bring the great Ninetails."
"Ozpin, it's been to long old friend." The Ninetails bowed her head slightly as the two behind her bent a bit further to show their respects of the Beacon headmaster. "I'll have my useall herbal tea."
"Right away mam," the old man nodded and walked off with the help of his cane. The two have had a great relationship for many years and have helped each other with the gimm. "You three can setle yourselves in the room down the hall. I'll be back with some tea."
The Ninetails walked the rest of the hall and opened a pair of dark wood double doors. A large study with red carpet and big leather chairs sat around a medium size coffee table. Bookcases covered each wall endlessly filled with written material on the simpleties of cookware to the complexities of weapon construction. The two caped figures stayed near the doorway as the Ninetails slowly walked to the table and chairs taking in the wide variety of books thats cover the walls.
The sound of heels clacked against the tile flooring outside the large study and a blonde women stepped in holding a tablet she seemed to be concentrating emenssly on. Looking up from the screen, emerald green eyes behind glasses stared at the large fox faunus. "Miss Yuki Tetsu, I wasn't expecting you to be here so soon."
"I had to arrive on short notice when I was informed there might be four suitors to my clan." Tetsu sat on a large black leather couch that was on the other side of the table looking in between the leather chairs. Her nine whitetails followed her and arranged themselves onto the cousins and back of the large furnisher. "I'm sure you have heard about my low numbers as of late, Goodwhitch. I need to know if any of them can take up the mask that was left behind."
"I understand your concerns Tetsu," Ozpin called from the doorway, walking in with a tray of five mugs. The fox in the violet cape and mask took the tray before walking towards the table with its comrade. Putting the tray on the table and returning to the Ninetails side, one on each end of the couch looked over the last two recipients as they took their seats. "Now that drinks are here, how about we get started."
"Happily," said the Ninetails as she grabbed a mug of tea and took a sip. "I'm sure you have overheard me and Goodwitch, but I'll say it again. I need to know if any of these four can take up the mask that was left behind."
"And I'm sure one of them can pick up were Keiko had left off." Ozpin looked towards his coworker and gave a small nod. Goodwitch tapped the screen to her tablet a few times and put it on the table, facing the Ninetails. "These are the four girls that have registered to attend Beacon. They are the only fox faunus to have registered to any of the huntsman academies this year apparently."
"Amber K, Blue O, Brown B, and Green S." Tetsu looked over the screened electronic, cyan eyes focused on the small descriptions of the huntress in training about were they came from and what they have already done. "I'm suspecting theses are the colour of their eyes followed by their first initials."
"Correct. We are planning on putting all four on the same team, it will be easier to check on them for any signs of a Kitsune."
"What about the initiation process were you launch them off a cliff? It would be suspicious that they didn't have to go through it while every other student does."
"That's where you're girls come in," Ozpin smiled as he stirred his cup of coffee. "Some of your best scouts and spies will follow the girls and lead them to each other. And when they arrive at the old temple, we will swap relics so they end up with the same one."
After hearing Ozpin's plan to get the four together, Tetsu couldn't help but smile. "After all these years and your still as sly as ever." With a small chuckle the Ninetails got back on track of the meeting. "Alright, is there anything I need to know about these girls before we get to deep into this."
"Only a few things that could give us a clue who is a Kitsune or not," Goodwitch said as she tapped on the tablet again showing some more information about the girls. "They all fit a description of Keiko's child, being the only fox faunus in their families. Amber K. and Brown B. are openly adopted, and Green S. was raised in a temple back in Vacuo, but Blue O. is not as easy to track. She is in a family of many different types of faunus."
"That doesn't suggest anything so far… Anything else."
"Green S. seems to be the only one of the four able to use magic. We don't know if she just has an open soul or if she was taught in the temple, or if she even is a Kitsune or not. And from the blood sheets we got of them, its possible that Amber K... has the Kumiho virus."
Shocked eyes looked up towards the headmasters right hand woman. "It's possible that Amber K. has the Kumiho virus? That makes things a lot more difficult."
"That's only if she is the Kitsune." The faces of all around became suriose before Tetsu broke the silence.
"This is a predicament. I will make preparations just incase Amber K. is the Kitsune we're looking for and I want you two to keep an eye on her especially. Manga, Hisako I say it's time we head back."
"Yes master," the two said in unison as they bowed their heads.
"We'll update you on anything odd between them once the plan goes through," Ozpin said as he stood, aprotching the fox faunus of the same height with his hand outstretched.
Tetsu grasped Ozpin's hand with both of hers and gave a shake with a small bow. "And I'll send some Kitsunes to help with the initiation in the following weeks. May luck be on our side." With a few bows from all parties involved, the Ninetails and her guards walked off into the large hall way again.
"Master," Manga spoke up," may I ask what is the Kumiho virus?"
"Such innocent children you are," Tetsu said as she put a paper seal onto the wall at the end of the hall. The seal had japanese lettering on it that translated to Temple of the Fox. Seals were magical slips of paper that could do almost anything it's caster could and would usually say what the spells name or ability is in Japanese. Like the seal had suggested, a portal that lead to the Ninetails Temple had opened. The daylight spread through the hall of night and some other Kitsune on the other side stood in attenshun. "Maybe one day I can tell you, but just be glad you don't have it yourself."
Manga shared a look with her partner before following the Ninetails into the portal taking off her mask and unhooking her cape. "Maybe it's best I don't know yet."
So that's the beginning of Heart of Paper. More to come soon. I'll try to upload the next chapter as soon as possible. If you could leave a review so I know where to improve my writing, I would really appreciate it.
