Elphaba dragged Dorothy into the bedroom.
"Tell me why you're here!" the Witch commanded.
Dorothy was crying. "I came here to…to…to…"
"Say it! You came here to kill me. To take my broom and give it to the Wizard. I know that he is the one how sent you."
Dorothy cried even harder. The witch sighed.
"You're only making this hard on yourself."
"I came here to…to… to… ask for your forgiveness," Dorothy managed to say between breaths.
"Listen here, you farm brat, I…" the witch stopped and stood there, shocked. "Forgiveness?" she asked, stepping closer to the girl.
"Yes. I didn't mean to kill your sister. It was an accident. I had no control over the house."
Elphaba's face softened.
"I know we didn't get off on the right foot. I was just hoping that we could start over," said the farm girl as she extended her hand towards the Witch.
"I'm Dorothy Gale," the girl introduced herself.
"Elphaba," said the Witch as she shook Dorothy's hand.
Dorothy smiled. "Maybe you're not such a farm brat after all," Elphaba said as she smiled.
"Thank you… I think," Dorothy was confused, but she accepted Elphaba's statement as a complement.
"Would you like to stay for dinner?" asked Elphaba, trying to make the most of the situation.
"Um… sure! Thank you!" Dorothy said as she took Elphaba's arm and walked out the door. Just then, the Scarecrow and Lion walked in, carrying a bucket of water. Dorothy's smile vanished and Elphaba rolled her eyes. This was going to be a long night.
"You really think that's going to work?" Elphaba said as she stepped forward and grabbed the bucket of water from them. The Lion was shaking uncontrollably. Elphaba looked into their eyes and tilted her head. She thought that there was something familiar about the Scarecrow and the Lion.
"Fiyero?" she asked in a confused tone.
The scarecrow looked up into Elphaba's eyes. It was indeed Fiyero. He was the scarecrow. Elphaba remembered that night when she thought that she lost Fiyero. She was saying a bunch of different spells at the same time. She must have said a spell that changed Fiyero into a scarecrow, saving him. Elphaba dropped the bucket of water and ran to hug Fiyero.
Dorothy looked deeply confused. Elphaba, realizing what she was doing, let go of Fiyero and turned back to Dorothy.
"Shall we go?" she asked, stepping closer to the girl.
Dorothy was to shocked to reply. She felt herself being dragged by the Witch down the stairs. Liir was waiting for them.
"Is everything alright?" he asked.
"Yes! Go get the food!" ordered Elphaba.
"But, what about…?"
"She's staying for dinner. Now, go!"
Liir made a face, but went anyway.
Elphaba sat across the table from Dorothy and looked down at her empty plate.
"What was that all about?" Dorothy asked as Elphaba played with her hair.
Elphaba looked up. "Nothing! Nothing at all," she replied as Liir returned with the food.
Dinner was very quiet. Liir spent the whole time staring at Dorothy; Dorothy spent the whole time staring at Elphaba, and Elphaba spent the whole time looking over at the Scarecrow.
She wanted to go with Fiyero. She didn't know why she listened to Dorothy. She knew that Dorothy was going to eventually kill her and take her broom back to the Wizard. Elphaba knew that she should just enjoy being alive… for now.
