The Shocking Truth
The sky is so tragically beautiful, a graveyard of stars. My blonde hair waves slightly with the early evening wind. The porcelain tiles are starting to freeze my backside. Birds chirp softly above me; they are getting ready to go to sleep. Moonlight shatters the calm waters.
"Why didn't you ever tell me I was adopted?" I ask. Sitting down next to me on the porch, my mom answers, "We were protecting you."
Earlier that afternoon at school, (well it's not extremely fancy it mostly consists of two football fields and some old three-story buildings), my brother, (who reeks like mouldy garlic pizza wrapped in gym shorts and has brown hair with light brown eyes), and I were called down to the front office. This was extremely strange as we have never been called down to the office together, maybe my dad got sick or something went wrong, maybe he was in an accident!, although when we arrived after the office lady had told Joshua to phone our mom in the room situated behind her, she told me some guy wanted to talk to me, maybe he is a detective, maybe my dad was murdered! I felt sick, dizzy with all my accusations and theories, but wait the guy looks like me?
The guy had thick black hair, sea green eyes and wore a Hawaiian shirt, shorts, flip-flops and a three-pointed trident at his side; which I thought was weird as that type of thing was mostly used in drawings from Ancient Greece? The guy introduced himself as Poseidon (isn't that the name of the god of the sea from ancient Greek mythology?) and said that he had waited 13 years for this day to arrive, wait I'm 13! I thought to myself; this day could not get any weirder, I asked him what he had meant but he shushed me and told me to wait until my mom arrived. 10 minutes later my mom had arrived, she has long brown hair streaked with grey, eyes the colour of Desert sand, and a smile as warm as a quilt. When she had seen Poseidon standing next to us in front of the office building, I could see that emotions of dismay, distress and heartbreak ran across her facial features.
Poseidon had then said, "Sam, it has been too long."
She then took him aside and spoke to him in a hushed tone with tear streaming down her face, at that moment of time I couldn't tell if it had been of extreme sadness or happiness. Poseidon walked over to us after my mom finished talking to him and said, "Katara, Joshua grab your bags we are going home."
The speechless journey home was excruciatingly long, who was this man? Why was he here? Is he a family member? I mean he does look like me except for the black hair. This had been all I could think about as waves of hyperventilation finally crashed through my mind and heart. As soon as we arrived home my mom told Joshua to go upstairs and get the RED file from the study. Then Poseidon and her turned to face me (I could hear my heart beat out of my chest), my mom looked sad, and told me while gesturing to Poseidon that I was adopted and Poseidon was my birth father and that my birth mother had disappeared after childbirth, while also handing me my real birth certificate from the RED file⦠My heart stopped beating; my limbs frozen in time.
