Gone

Most days she sits on the porch overlooking the sea. They bought the house for just that reason. Her children worry and their children won't stop asking questions, they didn't know about her past with the sea. Only her husband understood, her days are coming to an end and she is seeking closure. Closure that he knows will never come. It has been too long.

He brings her a glass of water. She reaches for it but never takes her eyes of the sea. This behavior started three weeks ago when she awoke in a cold sweat with tears streaming down her face. Some long lost memory had come to her that night, and put itself in the front of her mind. She could think of nothing else.

Her husband walked back in the house. "How long do you think she will be like this?" His youngest daughter asked. She reminded him so much of her mother he could barely look at her.

"Not much longer," he said solemnly. Hope welled in the young girl's eyes for she failed to miss her father's intentions.

"I hope she is better for my wedding!" She cried as she ran out the door.

A tear fell from the old man's eye, for he knew it wouldn't be so.

At sunset, he joined his beloved wife on the porch as he did every evening. "My dear Elizabeth, will I ever have you back?" He asked as always, not expecting a response.

"I have to wait Will. He's coming back, they are going to find him."

Will was shocked by this, she hadn't spoken since her nightmare.

"He is never coming back, my love. It has been forty years, they've all gone."

"I promised myself I would see him again, that he would live. It is my fault he is gone. I am the one that locked him up." Several tears streamed down her face.

"It is not your fault. Please, come back to me Elizabeth, I love you."

"Will," she grabbed his hand and looked forlornly at him. It was the first time in weeks that they had looked into each other's eyes. "I love you more than you can imagine. I want you to know I always have, you were always first to me." Will's cheeks became wet; he leaned over and kissed her. "Goodbye Will."

Her eyes closed for the last time and she had been looking at him. He knew everything she said was true.
