Short one-shot with Reyna.

Warning: May contain depressing and sad thoughts from the mind of Reyna, praetor of Rome.

Disclaimer: I do not own the characters, or overall personality of any of the people I mention. I just wrote Reyna's thought process.

First it was Jason.

The boy she first met, the Roman. The man she watched rise to be a leader along side her, a praetor. Always doing his job, whether or not it hurt him in the process. The warrior. Fearless. Brave. Just a friend.

Every step he took towards her was one step too far away. Aphrodite was right. He would never love her. He would never love the person that had been right beside him the whole time. It was too obvious.

The things that Reyna covered with a mask, a mask that everyone knew. Except him. He was the one who dove deeper into it, knew her past. But not what she wanted of her future.

Clueless about her feelings.

Then he was gone. Disappeared from the face of the earth. She didn't sleep for days, waiting for him to return. Waiting for everything to be right again.

The camp mourned for the loss. But she suffered the most, in secret. She lost everything. Everything she only dreamed of. The things that he could never give her. The things that were only a part of her imagination.

Then Percy. The Greek, who reminded Reyna of Jason so much, but not enough. The person who ruined her life when he didn't even know her. Gave her the chance to really get to know herself. Brave, handsome, loyal. But reckless. Humorous. The qualities that she only imagined Jason could have. The ones she thought being with her could give him, in time.

But of course, there was another for him. Another warrior. Someone who seemed like Reyna. Someone who others couldn't deny was their leader. A fighter. If only she wasn't there to take him away. . .

Then Jason returned with her. The girl with the eagle feather intertwined in her hair. Who's eyes couldn't seemed to decide what color they were. She was beautiful. Way over anyone Reyna could dream of competing with. She crushed her dreams without a second thought, probably not even realizing it.

The day he returned was the day she realized her future.

Her only possibility for a future. Leading a camp with no one's help. Saving the world without anyone to inspire her. Without someone to come back to after every battle, to throw her arms around and kiss. To love. No one to be with. Yes, someone would step up to be a praetor beside her, but it wouldn't be someone she could call her own.

The ship tilted to the side, notifying her that the crew had been spotted, and was making its way towards them. She climbed the stairs, holding onto the banister.

As she did, she put her mask back so no one can ever get through it. Never again. Not like Jason did. Not like Percy did.

Because if she let it happen again, she would go through the same thing. The pain. The suffering. The punishment. It was inevitable. Because there would always be someone else. Someone else who would rip her heart out again, tell her there was no hope for love. To be happy.

The last thought Reyna had as she walked into the sunlight:

Forever alone.
