Comment: I don't own anything! Just the plot.

He walked along the fallen ruins. Dirt and blood stained his black boots as he reviewed the evidence of the battle.

People use adjetives like horrible and dreadful to describe the remains of warzones, but Snape thought they looked more like construction zones. He did not see any reason to attach emotions to the fallen buildings and debris that lay scattered across the ground. It was much easier to walk by them if he considered them analytically – just cement and wood. Nothing personal. Well, easier until he saw the bodies.

There were a couple of casualties. The battle had ended a few hours ago but most members of the Ministry of Magic were deployed to another sector to address another fight. Snape was ordered to return to the site and report its condition to the Dark Lord, who wanted to know if any members of the Order of the Phoenix had been murdered in the fight. "John!" cried a woman. "Help!"

The older man paled. "That sounds like my wife." He glanced anxiously towards the explosion and then looked at Snape as though debating what to do. Hesitating, the man took another step towards Snape. "Here," he extended his hands to give Snape the body.

"No." Snape recoiled. "I can't."

"Take her!" John ordered. "She needs to go to headquarters for immediate attention with some Doctors. I've got to help my wife."

Before Snape could protest again, the muggle man shoved the unconscious body in his arms and ran off. Snape had no choice but to hold on, and then he looked down.

He was holding Hermione Granger
