Break On Me
Author's Note: I hadn't planned on writing another story so soon but the end of last night's episode really made me think of this song and I wanted to see if I could write a quick one-shot for Alex and Maggie based on Break On Me by Keith Urban.
I own nothing but the idea for the story.
Picks up right after the last scene with Alex and Maggie.
Maggie held a sobbing Alex in her arms. She could guess what had happened but she needed Alex to say the words. "Tell me." She whispered in Alex's ear.
"He betrayed us," Alex sobbed. "It was all a trick to access the DEO database and get the National Alien Registry."
"Oh Alex, I'm so sorry." More than anything Maggie wanted to fix it, to make everything better for Alex but she knew that wasn't possible. All she could do was be there for her.
"It hurts so much Maggie. I don't think I can stand it. I wish my heart would just stop right now. I don't think I can hold it together for another minute. I know it's terrible but part of me wishes we never found out he was still alive. Then I never would have dreamed of finding him and bringing him home."
There'll be days your heart don't wanna beat
You pray more than you breathe
And you just wanna fall to pieces
And nights, those two AM calls
Where dreams become walls
And you just need a break
"I'm right here Alex" Maggie pulled her closer, laying Alex's head on her chest. "If you need to fall apart go head, break on me, I'll pick up the pieces, baby, I promise."
Break on me
Shatter like glass
Come apart in my hands
Take as long as it takes, girl
Break on me
Put your head on my chest
Let me help you forget
When your heart needs to break
Just break on me
Alex sat up and looked at Maggie with confusion and heartbreak in her eyes. "I was so sure he was the same man I remembered from my childhood. I wanted that to be true so badly I couldn't see the truth. Even when Kara tried to tell me something wasn't right. I said terrible things to her Maggie. I told her she wasn't part of my family!"
There'll be times when someone you know
Becomes someone you knew
But you'd do anything to change it
And words you wanna take back
But you know you can't
When the page just won't turn
And it still hurts
Maggie pulled Alex back to her, rubbing soothing circles on her back. "You and Kara will be fine Alex. When your ready you'll go talk to her and she'll understand."
"I'm not ready to go anywhere or do anything yet," Alex mumbled against Maggie's chest.
"That's okay baby, take as long as it takes. Let me help you forget." Maggie replied giving Alex a gentle squeeze.
Break on me
Shatter like glass
Come apart in my hands
Take as long as it takes, girl
Break on me
Put your head on my chest
Let me help you forget
When your heart needs to break
Just break on me
Hours later, after Maggie had moved them to the couch and Alex had cried herself out then fallen asleep to the sound of Maggie's heartbeat and Maggie had dozed off as well, Maggie had awoken when she felt Alex begin to stir. "How you doing?" she whispered against Alex's hair.
"I'm better" Alex replied with a watery smile. "I just needed to cry it out. I'm sorry you had to see it. I'm not used to anybody seeing me cry."
That broke Maggie's heart almost as much as Alex losing her father again. "Alex, I love you, when you need somebody, like right now, you're where I'll be."
Oh, when you need somebody
When you need somebody right now
You're where I'll be
Break on me
Shatter like glass
Come apart in my hands
Take as long as it takes, girl
Break on me
Put your head on my chest
Let me help you forget
Your heart needs to break, just break on me
Break on me
Break on me, baby
