A Rose By Any Other Name.

Often Kate would lie around her pool, thinking what her life would be like if her name was still Caitlin Todd. She wondered if she would still be working at NCIS, living at her small 2bed-room apartment and allowing work to control her life. Maybe she would have met some nice man, him and would be carrying his child. Kate could only smile at herself at times like these because in truth she couldn't think of a better life than her life as Caitlin Gibbs.

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Ducky had always called her Caitlin. Her given name came with an air of elegance that she didn't usually like. Her only memory of being called Caitlin, before ducky, was when her mother would introduced her to the wealthy families of her latest boyfriend in a hope to impress them and gain there approval.

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

She had always introduced herself as Kate. That was all she wanted people to call her. It was short, simple and to the point. When she said it she left no room for speculation that it was a shortened version of something. It was her way of say that she was not going to be sharing any unnecessary personal information.

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Her father had called her Katie Koo. When she was younger she loved it. He was the only one allowed to call her that. As she became a teenager she thought it was babyish and told her father not to call her that anymore. It wasn't until he was gone that she began to miss it. She knew it was special and only for her and she regretted ever telling him to stop. From that day, anyone that would call her Katie would be immediately told that her name was Kate. Not Katie. The honor of calling her that went to her father, until she met Jethro Gibbs.

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

She was introduced to him as Agent Todd. He called her Kate. Even when she was working under him, he would always call her Kate while Tony and Tim were Dinozzo and McGee. The first time he called her Katie was when her mother had died. She remembers how he held her in his arms telling her everything would be ok. She liked the sound of it coming from his lips. It was warm and loving and just sounded right.

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

And now, she would lie in her bed rubbing her stomach. They didn't have a name for their unborn child so they called her little nicknames and smile as she responded to their talking with small kicks and somersaults. It wasn't until she was pregnant that Kate realized the true affection that is shown in the names you are called.

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

So this story came to me today as I realised that everyone in my family has a different name/nickname for me and I thought it would make a cute Kibbs story.

Please review on your way out.
