This was originally from yet another series of oneshots I'm planning (very different from my last one, PM me if you wanna know more) but it didn't quite work. However, I like it so much I couldn't just let it rot!
Enjoy!
Mariam opened the door to see Mariah standing there, bedraggled and shivering, her face dark and twisted with anger.
"What happened?" she asked, concerned.
"Nothing I wasn't expecting." As Mariam enfolded her girlfriend in her arms, she felt the shivers increase in violence and heard the little, tight gasps for breath that meant Mariah was fighting back tears with everything she had.
"Come on, lynx," she demanded, using Mariah's pet name to try and get her to listen. Mariah smiled a little at her nickname, a tiny, cynical twisting of one corner of her mouth.
"I-I told her…" she whispered almost soundlessly. "I told her, Mariam…"
"And?" Soft navy hair brushed her shoulders as Mariam moved her head until their noses were almost touching, her green eyes intense. She lifted a lock of strangely lank, greasy pink hair and put it carefully behind Mariah's ear. "What happened?"
"I'm not allowed to be this way, am I?" Mariam said nothing but held her tighter, aware that Mariah was virtually talking to herself. "It's a well-known fact half the boys in this damn sport are as straight as a fucking dodecahedron, but when I decide to come out at last ..." She broke off and pressed her hot cheek against Mariam's in a search for comfort. "I hate her." she mumbled.
"Hate who? Your mother?"
"Who else?" Mariah snarled. "Who else would have done this?"
"Done what?" That was it, Mariam's patience had snapped. "Talk to me, right now!" She gave Mariah a shake.
"Why do you think I look like this?" came the furious response. Mariam went cold.
"But ... you're only sixteen ... she's not allowed, is she? " she whispered, stunned. Tears started to seep down Mariah's cheeks and she shook her head. "And ... and she's really done it? That's inhuman! How can she call herself your mother?"
"She doesn't anymore. I'm disowned from my own family and kicked out of the house." Mariah was endeavouring to keep a level tone, but sobs fought their way through and shook her words. "I slept in a shop doorway last night."
Bit random, I know. I love this pairing!
