Summary: A quiet moment in the moonlight.

Perry shrugged off his lab coat as he headed for the exit. He looked up at the wall clock as he passed the nurse's station. If he was lucky he'd make it home by midnight.

Turning a corner, he glanced through an open doorway as he walked past. A tall shadow bled into a block of light. Slowing, Perry took a step back and looked again. JD stood at the window, leaning his weight against its cool surface. His arms were loosely crossed over his chest. His eyes were turned up towards the cloudless sky.

Perry stepped closer and looked into the room. A young girl, maybe thirteen, lay beneath a mass of tubes and wires. The soft beeping in the background was slow, but steady. A pink quilt was draped across the standard issue hospital blanket.

Her doctor sighed from his position at the window. Perry turned his attention to the younger man. His frame was outlined in a silvery light that tangled brightly in his hair and slid down over his shoulders. His skin was pale and tinged with a soft blue from the tint on the window. The shadow between his lips ran deep, highlighting the small frown that tugged at the corners of his mouth. His blue eyes glowed as they searched the sky.

Black and white and blue. For a moment he could do nothing but stare at the figure wrapped in moonlight. It was beautiful.

Perry hadn't realized he'd stepped into the room until he found himself reaching out to touch JD's shoulder. The kid started and turned to face the older doctor, his hands clenching reflexively. The two stared at one another in silence.

"Standing here all night isn't going to make her any better," Perry said finally, lowering his hand.

JD swallowed. Perry caught the movement, light and shadows fighting and fleeing one another across JD's skin. JD lowered his head and pulled his arms tighter across his chest. "I don't know what else to do," he whispered.

Perry understood. "Go home, Newbie. Get some rest."

JD rubbed a hand across his face, a gesture Perry recognized as one of his own. "I'm fine," he said quietly, moving past Perry to pick up the chart off the patient's bedside table.

Perry sighed. "I'll stay with her."

The young doctor looked up at his mentor. "Aren't you leaving?"

Perry glanced at the coat in his hand, then shrugged in back on. "I just got in."

"Oh." JD nodded and placed the chart back down on the table. Running a hand through his hair he mumbled his thanks and stepped towards the door. Perry moved around JD to pick up the chart he'd left. Opening it, he walked towards the window and held the pages up to the light as he read them.

Pausing in the doorway, JD took a moment to note how lovely Perry looked enveloped in the moonlight.
