I woke up to the sound of the heart monitor beeping and fluorescent lights shining in my eyes. I instantly was confused. Where am I? I tried to sit up. When I did, I felt a stabbing pain in my side and my whole body felt sore.
I looked around me. I scanned the room and concluded from the many pieces of medical equipment I was most likely in the hospital.
My eyes suddenly stopped as, I saw the figure in the chair in the corner of the room, sleeping. Tobias. His face was wet from tears. Tobias never cries nor have I ever seen or witnessed him cry. He looked totally exhausted and drained. My heart then dropped at the sight of him like this. What was going on? Questions then started rushing around in my mind. Did the memory serum work? Was Caleb alive? Why is Tobias sleeping in the chair, crying? Where are the others? Tobias was with Christina, is she okay? How long was I asleep? The questions continued to rise in my mind.
I then stopped thinking about all my questions and thought about my current condition. I was in a lot of pain, which I was attempting to ignore. My stomach was all taped up and covered in bandages. I then remember what happened. I went into the weapon lab instead of Caleb, because he wasn't doing it out of love, but guilt. I was able to resist the death serum, for a reason unknown to me. I went into the lab and unexpected found David there. He threatened to shoot me. And did, in the stomach. Thus the stabbing pain and bandages.
I tried to call Tobias, but I found my throat dry, my voice quiet, raspy, and barely audible. I looked around for water, or some kind of drink, but found nothing. I sat there for a few moments, thinking about what to do. I can't call someone. Trying to get up would be too risky with all the wires. Throwing something seems like the best option, I don't exactly have something to throw within my reach though. I kept thinking, but I came with nothing. I guess I'll just have to I wait for Tobias to wake up or someone to come in.
A few minutes later someone walked by in the hall, and then I realized it was Christina. Thank God, she was okay. She looked tire , like Tobias, but not nearly as tired as he did. She was carrying a bag and coffee in her hands. She walked slowly and then stopped I then heard the door open. She was holding the door open with her foot as she picked up the bag she put down to open up the door. She set the bag down on the counter by the door, and turned around facing me. Her face instantly went for sad, and drained to shocked. She looked at me for a moment and I smiled at her. She then started to cry and walked over to me.
"Hey… You're awake." she said.
"Yeah." I said barely able to get out the words.
"How are you feeling?" she said.
"I am okay, but if I could get some water that would be great." I replied, needing water if I would want to keep talking.
She nodded then walked over to the counter and got a bottle of water out of the bag.
She handed it to me and I drank it. It felt so nice on my throat. When I pulled it away she looked at me and said:
"Good?"
"Yes, much better. Thank you." I replied.
"So how are you really feeling?" she asked.
"Been better. In some pain."
"I am so glad you're awake."
"How long have I been out, exactly?" I asked.
"About five days if you include the day you were shot." she looks down as she says 'you were shot', which made me aware of the affect the incident had on her, and by the looks of it Tobias.
"Does Four know you're awake?" she asked.
"No, I didn't know how to wake him. He looks so exhausted and drained. How has he been?"
"He hasn't left you're side since we got back and figured out what went down. It's been tough. I tried to get him to eat, he only ate a bite or two of what I brought him each time though. I told him to go back to the dorms to sleep and that I would stay with you, he wouldn't budge though."
I looked away realizing everything that had happened, "Oh my God, I feel awful. Thank you for trying."
" 're welcome. You should probably wake him up though before he wakes and realizes how long you have been up without waking him or letting him know." she said.
"Yeah… That's probably a good idea, seeing all I have put him through, he deserves to know, so he can relax."
"Okay, sounds good. I am going to go grab you some clothes. Let me know if you need anything, I am so glad you're okay."
She then hugs me and walks towards the door to leave. Before she leaves I say:
"Thanks, Christina, for everything"
"No problem, anytime." she replies with a smile.
I then turn my head and look at Tobias sleeping, he looks so uncomfortable. I stop thinking about how bad I feel for putting him through so much stress before I start crying, and get upset from the guilt.
"Tobias." I call. He stirs in the chair.
"Tobias." I call again. He then instantly wakes up and his eyes shoot up to me.
His face is hard to read.
"Tris." he says. It's so good to here his voice. A tear slowly slides down my face. He gets up from the chair and walks over to me. He gently wipes away the tear from my face with his thumb. I grab his hand and lace his fingers with mine. His hands are so strong and warm. I feel so safe with him.
"Don't cry." he says. He rubs his fingers over my face and tucks a stray hair behind my ear. I take in his scent. He smells safe. I knew from that moment on, we were going to be okay.
