I know that Burr died before Eliza but for this fanfic I decided to have Eliza die first. As always constructive criticism is appreciated!
Waiting is a pain. You wait and you wait and you wait. Because you can't do anything about it. Because death comes when it does. Not too early or late. When Hamilton died next to Eliza, he felt like he wasn't ready for the afterlife. John Laurens told me that it was perfectly normal and that he also did stay around a little after his death.
Alexander visited his family and friends for one last time before he went away. He was so heartbroken to see them so sad. He couldn't tell that he was their. They wouldn't hear him or see him. After a couple of days, Alexander was finally ready to go to his afterlife.
When he arrived it was strange. It wasn't puffy clouds or angels singing and playing harps. Actually it was a mix of houses, small shacks and huge villas. One house in particular caught my eye. It looked familiar and when I realized it was my and Eliza's first house. Where Philip was born!
I felt like he should go there. He walked towards the door. With shaking hands Alexander knocked on the door. He could hear walking. Then to his disbelief…..his son…...Philip.
"Dad?! What are you doing….dead?" He stared in disbelief.
"Philip…." Alexander hugged his son for the first time in three years. Philip hugged him back.
"But dad….what happened, why are you dead? You aren't supposed to be dead." He said.
"Burr challenged me to a duel…" Alexander explained the whole story.
Philip invited him into the house. "Well welcome to heaven!"
An idea struck Alex.
"Where does John live?" He demanded.
"Which John exactly? I know lots of Johns. There's John the baker, John Smit,John—"
"No, John Laurens, have you met him? He died when you were a child." Alex said hastily.
"Oh that John. Yeah! He doesn't live far. Wanna see him? Also grandmas here and Washington!"
Hearing those words were like a melody to Alex. But after all the reunions and settling in, Alexander began to miss his life when he was alive. He missed Eliza, his other 8 kids, Angelica, Lafayette, Hercules and so many others. Fortunately time in heaven was a little faster. And the gunshot wound on Hamilton never healed. It just kept staining his clothes.
Ten years later, Alexander and Philip (who decided he wanted to look like a nine year old, yes heaven is weird) were walking down the street, when the saw a lady looking dazed and confused. They were in the market part of town so she was trying to get people's attention but failed. She looked familiar. They made eye contact.
"Angelica…..?" He began walking towards her. She also recognized him and burst into tears. She ran up to him and hugged him.
"I missed you so much…" She whispered. Then she saw Philip, who turned back to a nineteen year old, she rushed over and hugged him tight.
"Aunty Angel!" Exclaimed Philip in delight.
"How is my dear Eliza?" Alexander asked impatiently.
"Oh Alexander, you would be so proud! She has grown so much. But she still misses you so much. She is always worried that she won't be able to Secure your legacy. But she has done more than enough."
They talked for a while. It was good to see an old pal.
Next was Hercules Mulligan. Alexander wasn't prepared for that. It was a sunny day ( weather on earth reflects heaven's weather) and Alex was on a walk. He never could enjoy simple pleasures like this when he was alive, since he was always filled with so much work.
He has recently learned that one year before Angelica died, Burr's daughter, Theodosia, died at sea. He found her immediately, and there was another reunion.
As he walked by kids flying kites, adults having picnics and little children chasing each other, a beam of light appeared right in front of him (it had happened before, as when someone dies they are dropped off at random places and they appear in a beam of light. Once some lady materialized right in the middle of a concert stage. But when you live with that for so long, you get used to it.
So anyway, Hamilton was walking in the park when a beam of light flashed right in front of his face and Hercules appeared. They stared at each other for a couple moments until Alexander sheepishly said "Hi?"
"Alexander? Is that you? Am I dreaming? Or it this…."
"The afterlife? Yes. I missed you buddy." Alexander learned not to make introductions long.
They cried and hugged and cried some more. But Hamilton was not satisfied. He wanted to see his wife so bad, it tore his heart. It was as if the man upstairs was taunting him with everything but his wife.
After that it was a long time until someone else came. It was our favorite Frenchman Lafayette!
This time it was not Hamilton who first found him, but Philip. Philip was walking down the street, to Theodosia's house (yes I do ship these two no judge) when he saw a beam of light. Being the nice kid that he was, he approached the figure to welcome them into heaven. Lafayette immediately recognized him as Alexander's son and it's summary.
Then that day finally came. The day that Alexander waited for 50 or so years. He was sitting under a tree, reading. When slowly a beam of light appeared. Perhaps the man upstairs was kind enough to have Eliza drop of right in front of Hamilton. Because even before she fully materialized, Alexander was already hugging her. When she did, at first she was shocked.
As if something just scared her. Then Eliza noticed Alexander and a tear rolled down her cheek.
"Alexander…" She whispered.
Alex pulled back, noticing how his blood stained her dress.
"Eliza, you can't even comprehend how much I missed you! I-"
"Alexander, I don't think I did enough to ensure that your legacy keeps existing. I-" she began but was cut off by Alexander.
"I don't care about that! I have waited for you for so long! You're here and that's enough."
That's where Eliza broke down to tears. She hugged him and began telling him about how hard it was without him, about the orphanage, about how she did as much as She can to make sure that Alexander Hamilton was not forgotten.
When he brought her home and Eliza saw Philip. Let's just say that there were a lot of tears shed.
"Eliza, you have never met my mother. Come, I think you'll like her." And she did.
"Son, I am so proud of you." His mother said as they left.
But Alexander was still restless. He had one more thing to do. He had to tell Burr that he forgave him.
It didn't take long until Burr died. He, Eliza and Philip were walking down to the market together. When the whole place went silent.
Hamilton nudged a man closest to him "Hey, what's going on?"
The man turned to Hamilton and yelled "there he is!" The crowd parted in haste. On the other end was standing his friend, his enemy (frenemy?) Aaron Burr. He was definitely younger than 90 something, but he didn't look like the last time Hamilton saw him. He looked worn, with bags under his eyes and unrest in his eyes.
The way they were standing reminded Alex a little too much of the duel. His hand was raised slightly and he stood to the east, just like in the duel. The people were the trees and the look on Burr's face was the same as when he shot Alex. Eliza and Philip were both glaring at Burr. He looked like he just wanted to dive into the sea of people.
"Well if it isn't Aaron Burr, sir." I Said with as much confidence as possible.
"I think we have something to confer, sir." I continued. I didn't know so many things rhymes with 'sir'.
"Yes, but can we do it privately?" Burr stuttered.
"No." Answered the entire street in unison.
"Well, Hamilton- I…." Burr was at a loss for words. He was staring at Alex's gun wound. For some reason Hamilton's wound began to hurt a little.
"What's last is in the past, I have forgiven you a long time ago. But you need to forgive yourself and ask forgiveness from my entire family because Philip and Eliza are still a little angry."
The crowd filled the space between. Hamilton relaxed a little.
"Let's go home? He'll find us." Alex said.
"Yes I had enough of this market place."
When they got to their home they began cooking. Philip decided to tell Hercules and Lafayette what just happened.
"Oh, dear, I forgot to buy the eggs. Can you stay here while I go get the eggs." And with that Eliza left.
Alex was reading when he heard a knock on the door. Alexander got up from his seat and opened the door. It was Burr. He came in and sat at the table. Burr studied Hamilton so intently, as if it was a dream.
After a moment of silence Alexander asked "so how was life?"
"Good." Burr Answered in a bitter voice.
"Look Burr, you can't spend your life or afterlife, not saying a word. We have to address this issue now because if we don't, then…."
"I can't explain why I did that. I was so angry at you when you achieved more than me in life. Even though you lived less than me, i accomplished less. You were right. I don't talk enough. And I hide my beliefs. It wasn't your fault you chose Jefferson over me. I was too blind too see that." Burr looked defeated.
Alex stood up and said, "like I said i have forgiven you. There's no point in holding a grudge." Burr looked like he was about to cry but he was using all his strength.
"Come now, I think you want to see this."
Alexander lead Burr to Theodosia, Theodosia and her grandparents house.
When they knocked, Philip and Theodosia Answered. A lot of tears were shed.
